Aston Martin’s Stoffel Vandoorne Mocks Toto Wolff’s 2026 F1 Speed Claims: “In the Simulator We Hit 500 km/h!”

The debate over Formula 1’s radical 2026 regulations has taken a humorous twist. After Mercedes boss Toto Wolff suggested that the next generation of F1 cars could approach 400 km/h thanks to massive boosts in hybrid power, rivals have lined up to question — and poke fun at — his bold claim.

Wolff: “Close to 400 km/h”

Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, Wolff explained that with the new engines, which will deliver 450 hp from the battery alone (up from 180 hp today), certain circuits could see cars touching unheard-of top speeds.

“When maximum power is applied, we’ll be close to the 400 km/h limit,” Wolff said, pointing to the potential unleashed by F1’s upcoming hybrid package.

Verstappen Fires Back

Max Verstappen was quick to respond with a smirk:

“Maybe Toto’s engine can do that,” the three-time world champion quipped. “The FIA has already made it clear they won’t allow those speeds on certain circuits. It doesn’t mean there’s a hard limit, but they’re watching to make sure we don’t go too fast in terms of energy usage.”

Vandoorne Joins the Fun

Not to be left out, Aston Martin test driver and 2022 Formula E champion Stoffel Vandoorne took the banter one step further.

“In the simulator, we’ve even hit 500 km/h,” Vandoorne joked in comments to GPBlog. “The new rules can open opportunities for change, and we’ll try to use them to our advantage next year.”

The Belgian added that while the tweaks are extreme, they are also necessary:

“Everything is changing — the way you drive, the way you think about energy. The changes are needed for F1 to move forward.”

The Bigger Picture

With sweeping new regulations on the horizon — including radical hybrid power boosts and new aero restrictions — the paddock is already bracing for one of the biggest resets in F1’s modern era. But if the early chatter is anything to go by, the road to 2026 will be filled with speculation, skepticism, and a fair bit of humor.
