IUC aumentou em sete anos €233,1 milhões

The Prime Minister, António Costa, accused the opposition on Monday of wanting to scare the Portuguese with the Unique Circulation Tax (IUC), arguing that in 2024 and 2025 there will be a brake that limits and that the increase will be €25.

António Costa spoke about the controversy surrounding the increase in IUC for vehicles with license plates from 2007 or earlier, in the parliamentary debate on the general proposal of the Government’s State Budget for 2024, which will be voted on this Tuesday.

The Prime Minister assured that “each citizen who pays their IUC will be able to verify that, at most, they will pay an additional €25 throughout the year 2024”.

“And, in the next budget debate, we will be here again to verify that this €25 increase brake will remain in 2025 and the same will happen in each of the following years. That is, in a year from now, once again, we will know who is telling the truth and who only wants to scare the Portuguese”, said António Costa.

In the perspective of the government leader, the opposition wants to reduce the budget discussion to the topic of IUC, “because they do not want to discuss the increase in salaries and pensions, the reduction of IRS, the increase in social benefits, the reinforcement of public investment, or the good economic and budgetary results”.

It should be noted that DECO PROteste has already clarified the main doubts of motorists and reminded that the increase in IUC will be more expensive for “passenger cars and mixed-use vehicles with a gross weight of up to 2500 kilograms, registered between 1981 and June 30, 2007, as well as motorcycles, mopeds, tricycles, and quadricycles registered after 1992”. As for the other vehicles, they will see the unique circulation tax increase by about 3% compared to what was paid in 2023.
