Antonelli’s Emotional Spa Revelation: Revamped Mercedes Strategy for Hungarian Grand Prix

In a shocking turn of events, rising star Kimi Antonelli opens up about his emotional outburst at Spa and his intense journey back to the past with Mercedes, who will be racing with the old rear suspension in Hungary. Antonelli, determined to redeem himself after a disappointing European season, reflects on his struggles and the pivotal moments that led him to this crucial point in his career.

Desperate to leave behind a string of lackluster performances in the Old Continent, Antonelli aims to break free from the curse that has haunted him since Imola. With only points from overseas races in Montreal to show for, the pressure is on for the young driver to turn the tide at Hungaroring, the very place where he clinched his first Formula 2 Feature race victory last year.

Seeking to instill confidence in Antonelli, Mercedes made a bold technical decision during an emergency meeting post-Spa. The team opted to revert to the previous rear suspension, abandoning the new setup introduced at Imola, which had only proven effective in Canada so far. This strategic retreat to familiar territory elates the 18-year-old driver, who struggled to adapt to the new technical development compared to Russell, citing his limited F1 experience as a hindrance.

In an exclusive statement captured by our correspondent Carlo Platella, Antonelli expresses his hopes for the upcoming race weekend with the old suspension. “This weekend we will go back to the old suspensions. I hope this brings back the driving feel because, apart from Canada, I struggled to drive the car and gain confidence,” Antonelli reveals candidly. “I also didn’t adapt well because I always tried to maintain my style and drive the car as I wanted, but it didn’t work out: I have an aggressive style, which made the W16 even more unpredictable. George, on the other hand, managed to adapt a little better, but both of us will be driving with the old suspensions.”

Reflecting on his emotional outburst at Spa, Antonelli shares his perspective on the importance of releasing pent-up frustrations. “I think sometimes it’s better to do this instead of keeping everything inside. I was very frustrated with my performances, feeling that the potential was much higher than shown. I definitely felt much better afterward. Especially after qualifying, I clearly understood that I wasn’t giving my best and looked inside myself,” Antonelli admits. “In these cases, I like to turn the page immediately and hit the track. Spa was a tough weekend, and I really want to do well this weekend before the summer break. I think if we had gone on break immediately, it would have been really tough for me because I would have been pissed off all the time!”

As Antonelli prepares to rewrite his narrative at the upcoming race, all eyes are on the determined young driver to see if he can overcome his inner demons and emerge victorious on the track. Stay tuned as the thrilling saga unfolds at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Antonelli seeks redemption and a shot at glory amidst fierce competition and personal revelations.
