Andretti Global, Prema Racing Hit with Suspensions & $100k Fine for Indy 500 Tech Violation

Andretti Global and Prema Racing Slapped with Massive Fines and Suspensions Post-Indy 500 Drama

In a shocking turn of events following the Indy 500, Andretti Global and Prema Racing have been hit with severe penalties after failing post-race technical inspections. The aftermath of the 109th running of the iconic event continues to unravel with the revelation that two cars from Andretti Global and one from Prema Racing did not meet the required standards set by IndyCar.

IndyCar officials disclosed on Monday that Kyle Kirkwood’s No. 27 car, Marcus Ericsson’s No. 28 car from Andretti Global, and Callum Ilott’s No. 90 Prema car all flunked their post-race inspections conducted after the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. The violations discovered were alarming, with the Andretti Global cars found to have made unauthorized modifications to the “Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and cover-to-A-arm mounting points using unapproved spacers and parts.” These alterations were deemed to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, giving the cars an unfair advantage on the track.

On the other hand, Prema Racing’s No. 90 entry raised eyebrows for not meeting the minimum endplate height and location specifications, specifically failing to comply with the left endplate height requirement and the rule dictating the precise positioning of endplates, wing flaps, and mainplanes.

The repercussions for these transgressions were severe. All three cars have been relegated to the back of the official Indy 500 standings, causing a major shakeup in the final race results. Ericsson’s 2nd place finish has been demoted to 31st, Kirkwood’s 6th position now sits at 32nd, and Ilott’s 13th place plummeted to 33rd. Additionally, each car has been slapped with a staggering $100,000 fine, and their respective teams and competition managers will serve a one-race suspension, starting at the upcoming race in Detroit this weekend.

Despite the gravity of the situation, both Prema Racing and Andretti Global have remained tight-lipped, refraining from issuing any statements regarding the penalties imposed on them.
