Antonelli’s FP1 Crash at Monza: A Learning Curve, Not a Setback said Toto Wolff

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, an 18-year-old rising star, is set to make waves in Formula 1 by joining Mercedes in 2025. His highly anticipated debut will make him one of the youngest drivers in F1 history. The young Italian has shown exceptional talent with Prema Racing in Formula 2, earning comparisons to none other than Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who dominated F1 from an early age.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s technical advisor, has acknowledged Antonelli’s talent but was quick to caution that the comparisons to Verstappen come with high expectations. He emphasized that Antonelli must first prove himself in the big leagues to earn a spot among the sport’s elite.

“I was impressed by his speed. Max is Max. He [Antonelli] has to prove that first,” Marko said, highlighting the pressure that comes with being likened to the reigning world champion.

Antonelli’s debut will coincide with Max Verstappen’s ongoing dominance in the sport, as the Dutchman continues to chase his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship in 2024. However, the young Italian is determined to make his mark as Mercedes ushers in a new era.

With Lewis Hamilton departing for Ferrari in 2025 after 12 legendary years with Mercedes, the Brackley-based team is making a bold move to reshape its future. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed optimism about the young, dynamic driver lineup of Antonelli and George Russell for the upcoming season.

“We will be dealing with a young team next year. Going into the season with George and Antonelli means we are opening a new era,” Wolff said. “The previous era was great, and now is the time to turn a page and make a new start.”

Wolff has high hopes for this youthful pairing and is keen on nurturing both drivers as part of his vision to restore Mercedes as a championship-winning force. Though the team has had moments of brilliance in 2024—such as strong showings at Spa and Silverstone—there’s work to be done. As Mercedes continues to address the challenges with the W15, all eyes are on the development of their 2025 campaign with Antonelli ready to prove he belongs among the best.
