An Italian racer is set to take over for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.

George Russell is set to have a new teammate at Mercedes in 2025, as Lewis Hamilton makes the move to Ferrari. The Formula 1 community has been buzzing with speculation ever since Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes after the 2024 season. He will be embarking on his 18th season with Ferrari, leaving behind a legacy at Mercedes.

One of the names that has been thrown around as a potential replacement for the seven-time world champion is the young and talented Italian driver, Kimi Antonelli. At just 17 years old, Antonelli has already made a name for himself in the world of karting and has an impressive track record. He has been crowned the European karting champion twice, as well as the Italian F4 champion and ADAC Formula 4 champion. Antonelli has also achieved victories in both the Middle Eastern and European regional championships.

Antonelli’s achievements have catapulted him to a remarkable position in his career. Instead of following the traditional path of progressing through Formula 3 (F3), he has been directly promoted to Formula 2 (F2) for the upcoming 2024 season. He will be racing for Prema, a team known for nurturing young talent. It is worth noting that Antonelli has already accumulated enough super license points to compete in Formula 1. However, he will have to wait until he turns 18 to be eligible to race at the highest level of motorsport.

Toto Wolff, the Team Principal of Mercedes, has expressed his belief in Antonelli’s potential. However, he has urged caution when it comes to discussing the young driver’s future in Formula 1 prematurely. Wolff emphasized the importance of Antonelli’s focus on his upcoming F2 campaign and advised against creating speculative rumors in the media. He believes that such distractions would not be beneficial to Antonelli’s development at this stage of his career.

Wolff stated, “Kimi has been a part of the Mercedes family since he was 11 years old. He has had a successful junior career, and it is crucial for him to concentrate on F2 at this stage. Speculation about his future in F1 will only serve as a distraction. He is still very young, having transitioned from karting just a few years ago. So, it is best not to engage in any discussions about Kimi’s entry into F1 at this point.”

It is important to note that fast-tracking young drivers to Formula 1 is not a new concept. Max Verstappen is a prime example of this. Verstappen skipped F2 entirely and made his debut in Formula 1 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest driver to compete in a race weekend. However, the rules have since changed, and drivers like Antonelli must be 18 years old to obtain their super license.

While the motorsport world eagerly awaits Kimi Antonelli’s journey towards the pinnacle of racing, it seems that patience and a steadfast focus on his F2 career will be the guiding principles for now. The future holds great promise for Antonelli in Formula 1, but it is important to allow him the time and space to develop and grow as a driver.
