Toto Wolff, the Team Principal of Mercedes, has expressed his belief in Antonelli’s potential. Wolff emphasized the importance of Antonelli’s focus on his upcoming F2 campaign and advised against creating speculative rumors in the media. He believes that such distractions would not be beneficial to Antonelli’s development at this stage of his career.
Wolff stated, “Kimi has been a part of the Mercedes family since he was 11 years old. He has had a successful junior career, and it is crucial for him to concentrate on F2 at this stage. Speculation about his future in F1 will only serve as a distraction. He is still very young, having transitioned from karting just a few years ago. So, it is best not to engage in any discussions about Kimi’s entry into F1 at this point.”
It is important to note that fast-tracking young drivers to Formula 1 is not a new concept. Max Verstappen is a prime example of this. Verstappen skipped F2 entirely and made his debut in Formula 1 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest driver to compete in a race weekend. However, the rules have since changed, and drivers like Antonelli must be 18 years old to obtain their super license.
