In a groundbreaking development, Valkyrie Systems Aerospace and defense contractor Kratos have unveiled their latest creation: the Valkyrie drone. This high-tech aircraft, also known as XQ-58A, is set to revolutionize combat drones as we know them.

Unlike traditional drones, the Valkyrie does not rely on conventional landing gear. Instead, it utilizes two innovative methods of getting airborne. The first method, known as rocket assist takeoff (RATO), involves the use of a ground-based launcher equipped with rocket boosters. This allows the drone to take off from any location, even in the absence of a runway or prepared stretches of road.

The second method, recently demonstrated by Kratos, involves the use of a trolley launch system. Named the Kratos Trolley Launch System (KTLS), this ingenious contraption allows the Valkyrie drone to utilize conventional runways or straight stretches of road for takeoff. The KTLS is a simple wheeled platform that provides the necessary support for the aircraft to depart a location seamlessly.

The Valkyrie drone itself is a marvel of engineering. Equipped with a single turbofan engine, it can reach a top speed of Mach 0.85 (652 mph / 1,050 kph). With a range of 2,449 miles (3,941 km), this combat drone is capable of carrying a variety of weapons, including Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) and small-diameter bombs. Its stealth attributes make it a formidable force on the battlefield.

While the Valkyrie drone is already impressive, its development is still ongoing. Valkyrie Systems Aerospace and Kratos are continuously working to enhance its capabilities and explore new applications. From testing new weapons and means of deployment to transforming it into a common platform for families of drones, the potential for this aircraft is limitless.

As the Valkyrie drone continues to evolve, it is clear that it will play a significant role in the future of military technology. Its ability to operate autonomously or be remotely piloted makes it a versatile asset for both standalone missions and supporting crewed jets. With its unique methods of getting airborne, this Aston Martin-inspired drone is truly a game-changer in the world of military aviation.

Kratos Unveils Revolutionary Drone Launching Technique

In a groundbreaking development, defense contractor Kratos has revealed a new method for launching its Valkyrie drone. Unlike traditional methods, which rely on a runway or catapult, the Valkyrie utilizes an unpowered trolley and its own engine to achieve takeoff speeds. Once the desired velocity is reached, the drone gracefully ascends into the sky, leaving the trolley behind.

To ensure a safe landing and protect the wheeled platform, drogue chutes are employed. Kratos has released a brief video showcasing this innovative procedure, captured at the North Dakota Grand Sky Range. You can view the footage below.

One of the key advantages of this launch technique is its ability to maximize the drone’s fuel and payload capacity. By eliminating the need for landing gear, valuable space is freed up and the overall weight of the aircraft is reduced.

While Kratos has not yet disclosed the details of a third launching method, it is evident that they are committed to pushing the boundaries of drone technology. The Valkyrie is just one of many drones currently in development by the company, all of which draw inspiration from gods, goddesses, and ancient mythology. Notably, Kratos is also working on the Mako, Air Wolf, Athena, and Apollo drones.

In addition to their drone projects, Kratos is also making significant strides in the field of hypersonic technology. Their hypersonic test vehicle, Erinyes, achieved its maiden flight in June, reaching speeds exceeding Mach 5, or 3,836 mph (6,173 kph). This breakthrough has opened up new possibilities for the defense industry to explore high-speed technologies.

As the Valkyrie continues to evolve, it is expected to serve as the foundation for a diverse family of drones. Recently, the General Atomics XQ-67A OBSS, the first member of this new drone family, completed its inaugural flight, further solidifying Kratos’ position as a leader in the drone industry.
