Alpino discute com Sainz, avalia Schumacher e considera Doohan

Carlos Sainz (ESP) Renault Sport F1 Team.Renault Sport F1 Team. Enstone, England. Thursday 12th October 2017.

In the world of sensationalist journalism, Flavio Briatore, despite his controversial history, has been tasked with rescuing the sinking ship that is the Alpine team, owned by Renault. After achieving success in Formula 1 with them previously, before his questionable actions caught up to him, Briatore is now focused on his current mission as executive advisor to Renault’s CEO, Luca de Meo. While rumors circulate, it appears that Carlos Sainz may play a role in the team’s revitalization plan.

According to reports from the Spanish media, including Marca, there has been a sudden twist in the narrative. Since Briatore’s official return to the F1 paddock as executive advisor of Alpine, he has expressed interest in having Carlos Sainz replace Esteban Ocon. It seems that Briatore is not the only one vying for Sainz’s talents, as Williams and Audi have also shown a burning desire to secure his services. The prospect of hiring the Spanish driver has visibly excited Luca de Meo.

Supporting the idea of this potential partnership, it is worth noting that on Sunday in Barcelona, Flavio Briatore and Luca de Meo were seen casually conversing with Carlos Sainz Sr. in the team’s hospitality area. This development raises the possibility that Sainz may find himself sharing a team with Pierre Gasly, who has not yet secured a contract extension.

Carlos Sainz previously competed for Renault in Formula 1 when he made the switch from Toro Rosso for the last four races of the 2017 season. He continued with Renault in 2018 before moving to McLaren at the end of that season. Sainz is familiar with both Vichy and Enstone.

During the weekend in Spain, there was anticipation for a significant announcement from Williams. Many speculated that the announcement would be the confirmation of Carlos Sainz as Alex Albon’s teammate for the 2025 season. However, this speculation was ended, possibly due to the influence of the new Alpine team.

Although Sainz seems to be the preferred choice (Plan A), Alpine is exploring alternative options (Plan B or Plan C). They have F1 reserve driver Jack Doohan waiting in the wings, ready to make the jump to the F1 grid. Additionally, Mick Schumacher, who was previously with Haas, has not ruled out a return to the top. Currently, Schumacher competes for the Alpine WEC Hypercar team.

Mick Schumacher, son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, will have his first test in a 2022-spec Alpine car at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. This test will take place before the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone.

Alpine has released a statement about their testing program: “As part of our TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) program, we will be testing reserve driver Jack Doohan, according to his 2024 schedule, as well as Mick Schumacher as part of his Alpine Endurance project next week at the Paul Ricard Circuit. We will continue to use our race support team and the A522 Formula 1 car during our TPC program.”

Although both Doohan and Schumacher are part of the Alpine Academy, the addition of 20-year-old Sainz to the list of candidates brings a level of experience that the two young drivers do not possess.

A decision on the future of the Spanish drivers is expected soon, as time is running out. This information comes from Marca, and we will have to wait and see what advice Flavio will give to de Meo.
