Mercedes to ‘stay in the background’ as Alpine contemplates Valtteri Bottas transfer

In a shocking turn of events in the Formula 1 world, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has declared that he will be taking a step back and allowing Valtteri Bottas to forge his own path amid swirling rumors of a potential move to the Alpine team.

After losing his race seat at Sauber, Bottas has been serving as the third driver for Mercedes this season. However, the Finnish driver has been vocal about his desire to secure a full-time race drive for the upcoming season, with all indications pointing towards a possible switch to Alpine.

The speculation intensified when Bottas was questioned about discussions with Alpine’s Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore, to which he cryptically responded, “Yeah, you could say that.” Wolff further confirmed that Bottas has conversed with Briatore on multiple occasions, hinting at the increasing interest in the talented driver.

Wolff expressed his support for Bottas, stating, “He deserves that seat. If someone grabs him as a race driver, we’ll let him go. Of course, with a tear in the corner of our eye.” The Mercedes boss emphasized that he would respect Bottas’ decision and provide guidance as a friend while choosing to stay in the background during this crucial time.

Alpine’s potential acquisition of Bottas could prove to be a strategic move, considering the team’s upcoming partnership with Mercedes starting in 2026. Bottas’ wealth of experience could address Alpine’s issues with its second driver, potentially providing stability and performance to the team.

As the Formula 1 offseason approaches, all eyes are on Valtteri Bottas and the unfolding drama surrounding his future in the sport. Will he make the leap to Alpine, or does Mercedes still have a role for him to play? Only time will tell as the pieces of this high-stakes puzzle fall into place.
