Alpine Driver Faces Imminent Grid Penalty at Emilia Romagna Grand Prix After FIA Launches Investigation

Trouble looms large for Franco Colapinto as the FIA initiates an investigation following an incident at the Imola Grand Prix. The Argentine driver, stepping in for Jack Doohan at Alpine, encountered a mishap during qualifying, leading to concerns over a potential grid penalty at the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Colapinto’s debut in the F1 2025 season took a tumultuous turn at Imola, where a dramatic crash in Q1 saw him collide with the barriers at the Tamburello chicane. Consequently, his qualifying performance was marred, with a failure to set a time in Q2 due to the earlier crash.

Adding to the young driver’s woes, a breach prior to the accident has put him at risk of incurring a grid penalty. Colapinto entered the pit lane without receiving the restart time from the FIA after a red flag incident involving Yuki Tsunoda during Q1. This transgression mirrors the penalties imposed on Mercedes drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli at the Bahrain Grand Prix last month.

As Colapinto awaits the FIA’s verdict, the spotlight also falls on his predecessor, Jack Doohan, who was seen in the Imola paddock in his new role as Alpine’s reserve driver. Despite losing his race seat, Doohan remains a crucial part of the team, serving as the primary reserve driver in cases where Colapinto or Pierre Gasly are unable to race.

The unfolding saga at Alpine underscores the high stakes and intense competition in the world of Formula 1, where even the smallest infractions can have significant repercussions for drivers and teams alike. Stay tuned for updates on the FIA investigation and its potential impact on Franco Colapinto’s racing future.
