As the Alpine F1 team bids farewell to its Renault engine heritage, Flavio Briatore has laid out an audacious plan to transform the French outfit into title contenders—powered by Mercedes and driven by a lean, efficient philosophy. Can Alpine reclaim its glory days under the Italian veteran’s leadership?

Renault Engines Out, Mercedes In: A New Era for Alpine

Alpine’s decision to ditch its iconic Renault engines for Mercedes power units from 2026 marks a seismic shift for the team based in Viry-Châtillon. The move has sparked speculation about the team’s future, with whispers of dismantling and a potential sale circulating in the paddock.

However, Flavio Briatore, the mastermind behind Alpine’s golden years as Renault, has quashed such rumors. Speaking to GRANDPRix247, Briatore made it clear:

“Alpine is not for sale. The objective is to make Alpine race winners and title contenders by 2027.”

Briatore’s Blueprint for Success

Briatore, known for his no-nonsense approach and title-winning pedigree with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, outlined a strategic roadmap for Alpine’s resurgence:

  • 2025: Alpine aims for consistency, targeting top-six finishes and occasional podiums with its final year using Renault engines.
  • 2026: Transitioning to Mercedes power units, Alpine will push for podium finishes in at least half the races, with race wins becoming “a natural consequence.”
  • 2027: The ultimate goal—a serious shot at the World Championship.

“Our strategy is to achieve success with a budget 30-40% lower than our main rivals,” Briatore revealed, citing the lean efficiency that defined his success with Benetton.

A Turnaround in 2024: Signs of Progress

Briatore’s impact is already being felt. Before the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Alpine languished in ninth place in the Constructors’ standings. But a stunning double podium for Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, coupled with Gasly’s strong end-of-season performances, vaulted the team to sixth in the final standings.

“The team’s progress shows what can be achieved when everyone pushes in the same direction,” Briatore remarked.

2025: A New Line-Up for the Final Renault Chapter

In 2025, rookie Jack Doohan will step into the spotlight alongside Pierre Gasly, marking the end of Alpine’s Renault-powered era. Briatore is optimistic about the team’s trajectory, but insiders suggest that his trademark intensity is already reshaping the team culture.

“With Flav at the helm, expect nothing less than fireworks,” one insider quipped. “Just ask Ocon.”

Why Mercedes Power?

Switching to Mercedes engines is a bold, controversial move, but Briatore insists it’s essential for Alpine’s long-term ambitions.

“Aerodynamically, we have more room for development than Ferrari and McLaren,” he explained. “With a more reliable and competitive power unit, podiums and wins become realistic goals.”

The partnership also aligns with Alpine’s focus on efficiency. With F1’s cost cap leveling the financial playing field, Briatore believes Alpine can replicate the success of his past championship-winning teams by outsmarting rather than outspending rivals.

The Briatore Factor: Love Him or Hate Him

Briatore’s return has injected both hope and controversy into Alpine’s future. Known for his high-risk, high-reward management style, Briatore is unapologetically ambitious.

“I wouldn’t have returned for any other team,” he declared. “I know this team’s potential, and I believe in what we can achieve.”

What’s Next for Alpine?

With Briatore’s leadership, Mercedes power, and a renewed sense of purpose, Alpine is poised for a dramatic transformation. While 2025 will likely be a transitional year, the pressure will be on in 2026 and beyond to deliver results.

For fans and critics alike, the question isn’t whether Alpine can rise to the top—it’s whether Briatore’s audacious vision can turn bold promises into championship reality.
