Will Carlos Sainz and Gasly become teammates in 2025?

Reports have emerged from the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix paddock suggesting that Alpine is making an offer to hire Carlos Sainz, who was previously expected to sign with Williams.

However, a report from Motorsport.com on Monday revealed that Alpine made a last-minute attempt to bring Sainz back to Enstone, where he previously drove for the team in 2018 during his days at Renault.

This report comes after Renault CEO Luca de Meo hired controversial figure Flavio Briatore as a special consultant for the Alpine team.

Briatore’s responsibilities include scouting Formula 1 driving talents, and he was seen in close proximity with de Meo during the Spanish GP weekend. Briatore was also seen in discussions with Carlos Sainz Sr, and it is suggested that Alpine even offered Sainz Jr a lucrative contract.

Alpine and Williams had contrasting performances at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Alpine advancing both cars to Q3 and securing a double points finish, while Williams struggled at the back of the grid.

Initially, it seemed that Sainz had chosen Williams over Sauber, but now Alpine has emerged as a strong contender for his signature.

If Sainz rejects Alpine’s offer, the French team has other options in progress. Jack Doohan is scheduled to continue his Test Car Program (TCP) in the 2022 A522 car at Paul Ricard, and Mick Schumacher will join him at the French circuit next week.

The Alpine team boss expressed confidence in the list of potential candidates, stating that the process is progressing well. It is clear that the team has a wide range of options to choose from.

On the other hand, Sauber seems to be facing obstacles in their search for driving talent, with Sainz being their main target. However, with limited options, Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson is being considered as the potential next partner for Nico Hulkenberg in the 2025 Formula 1 season, according to Motorsport.com Espana.

Lawson, who was overlooked for a full-time seat in 2024, may find a platform for his highly anticipated full-time debut in F1 with Sauber.

If Williams misses the chance to hire Sainz, they may consider turning to Valtteri Bottas, who was seen entering the team’s hospitality in Imola for possible discussions with James Vowles.
