Alpine concede contrato novo a Gasly – e intensifica busca por Sainz

The news that Pierre Gasly will continue his partnership with Alpine is a much-needed positive development for the struggling team. Gasly was considering other options, including Audi, but ultimately decided to stay. This decision is particularly important considering the team’s recent difficulties and the departure of key technical personnel. Losing Gasly would have been a major setback for Alpine, reminiscent of the disastrous 2022 driver market when they lost both Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri.

Gasly’s time with Alpine has shown promising progress. While his battle with Esteban Ocon was relatively even in the first half of last season, Gasly began to assert himself in the second half. Although Ocon started the 2024 season as the most impressive driver, Gasly has found his form since then. Despite uncertainties regarding the car’s specifications and overall performance, Gasly has proven to be a skilled and confident driver when given the right equipment.

Gasly’s unique driving style sets him apart, but it also limits his options with top teams. His tendency to brake late can be a disadvantage in slower corners as he often understeers the car. However, Gasly has made significant progress since his difficult time at Red Bull. He thrived with Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri and showed impressive performances when given the opportunity to compete with Red Bull and Mercedes. Gasly’s ability to adapt and work closely with the team has made him a valuable asset for Alpine.

The performance of Gasly in the Spanish Grand Prix showcased his abilities. Despite not having a car that perfectly suited his preferences, he delivered a superb qualifying lap and finished in ninth place. Gasly’s established position within the team provides continuity for the future and offers him the best chance of returning to the forefront of Formula 1. For Alpine, keeping Gasly is the best available option, regardless of whether they secure a high-level driver for the other seat.

Although Esteban Ocon is no longer in contention for the seat, there are still several candidates who could join Gasly at Alpine. Carlos Sainz is the most obvious choice, as he has narrowed down his options to Audi and Williams. However, changes at Alpine, including the appointment of Flavio Briatore, may have caused Sainz to reconsider. Valtteri Bottas is another strong candidate, with a track record of success and experience at Mercedes. Lastly, Jack Doohan, who has been with Alpine since 2022, has impressed the team with his work ethic and speed. Mick Schumacher, with his experience at Haas and Mercedes, should also not be ruled out as an option.

In the end, the decision on the second seat at Alpine will depend on the team’s priorities and the options available in the driver market.
