Fernando Alonso, from the Aston Martin F1 team, prepares for Qualifying

The Spanish driver dismissed the possibility of Verstappen’s departure being the unexpected twist in this year’s driver market. Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 champion, is one of several drivers whose contracts expire at the end of the season. Verstappen, on the other hand, has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, but his future has been uncertain due to the tense relationship between his father Jos and team principal Christian Horner. During a press conference at Suzuka Circuit before the Japanese Grand Prix, Alonso was asked if Verstappen’s departure could impact the competition for seats among him and other drivers. Alonso replied: “If Max leaves Red Bull, maybe that could have an impact, but I believe the chances of that happening are extremely slim. My focus is on my own affairs and, before summer, I intend to make a decision on whether I will continue racing or not. If I do continue, I will consider the best options available to me.” Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes, who is losing seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari at the end of the season, mentioned Verstappen as one of the top candidates for a possible replacement, should he become available. Wolff also listed Alonso, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race in the last two seasons, and rookie Kimi Antonelli, supported by Mercedes in F2, as potential options. Verstappen, during a press conference on Thursday, reiterated his satisfaction with Red Bull and stated that he is not currently considering a move to another team. (Reported by John Geddie)
