The Formula 1 World Champion has proposed a new idea to improve testing in the sport. He suggests adding an extra day of testing and allowing teams to run both of their cars during that time. Today, the initial three-day testing session began at Bahrain International Circuit, a week before the Grand Prix at the same venue. This prompted the 41-year-old Alonso to express his dissatisfaction with the limited preparation time available before the start of the season.
Alonso voiced his thoughts on the matter, stating that the current testing period in Bahrain is too restricted. He believes it is unfair that teams are only given one and a half days to prepare for a World Championship. He compared Formula 1 to other sports, highlighting the significant financial investment, extensive marketing, and positive aspects associated with the sport. Alonso questioned why such limited testing is provided when the sport claims to be getting closer to the fans. He suggested that the testing period should be extended to four days in Bahrain, with two days allocated to each driver.
The Spanish driver further expressed his confusion about the current testing setup. He wondered why the testing period could not be extended to three days, but acknowledged that dividing the time fairly between drivers would be challenging with an odd number of days. Additionally, Alonso questioned why teams do not utilize two cars for testing, considering they are already present in Bahrain and will be racing there the following week. These questions were raised by the experienced driver from Aston Martin F1.
Meanwhile, it is not surprising that Alonso has been linked to the vacant Mercedes F1 seat, which will be available at the end of the season when Lewis Hamilton moves to Ferrari. The German team is currently searching for a teammate for George Russell. Despite being under contract with Aston Martin, Alonso commented on his plans beyond 2024. He acknowledged that if an agreement is not reached, he would be an attractive option for other teams. However, he made it clear that he will not stay in F1 just for enjoyment and will consider other possibilities that arise. With only three F1 world champions on the grid, Alonso believes he is in a favorable position for the 2025 season.
