Alonso shares advantages of plant-based diet on performance during tests

Fernando Alonso, a member of the Aston Martin F1 Team, has revealed how embracing a partially plant-based diet contributed to his exceptional physical test results prior to the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Alonso, who has been actively competing in F1 since 2001, is now preparing for his 21st season at the age of 42. Despite common expectations that athletes decline in their 30s, Alonso’s performance last season was outstanding. He achieved eight podium finishes and outscored his teammate Lance Stroll by 206 points to 74. While his contract with Aston Martin ends this year, Alonso has expressed his intention to continue racing if he is in top form. He has focused on preparing himself better than ever for a long season and will assess his options if he decides to continue racing.

Alonso’s decision to incorporate a nutritionist into his team has led to a transformation of his diet, opting for a plant-based approach similar to Lewis Hamilton. The nutritionist has explained the benefits of dietary modifications, and Alonso is considering adopting a plant-based diet or a similar path to enhance his endurance and derive more energy from his food. However, he remains open to some flexibility in his dietary choices.

Alonso’s positive test results have reinforced his belief that he can continue competing in Formula 1 until the age of 50. However, he acknowledges that the demanding schedule of the sport may pose challenges to this aspiration. When asked about his future plans and retirement age, Alonso admits uncertainty. While he previously believed 42 or 41 would be his limit, witnessing his own motivation and strong performance last year has led him to consider racing for a few more years. With sufficient motivation and commitment, he believes it may be feasible to continue driving until the age of 48, 49, or even 50. However, he recognizes that Formula 1 requires complete dedication and sacrifices in other areas of life. While he may continue for a few more years, he is unsure if he will race until 50 due to the demanding calendar and other interests in life.

With the upcoming record-breaking 24-race calendar, Alonso believes that drivers will need to strategically plan their schedules to avoid burnout. He emphasizes the importance of efficient travel and spending the appropriate amount of time in each location. Alonso intends to minimize his time in certain countries, such as Japan, Australia, and China, to mitigate the effects of jet lag and reduce the number of days spent away from home. He also highlights the significance of maintaining a consistent food routine to sustain energy levels throughout the season. These factors will be crucial for him to navigate the challenges posed by the lengthy calendar.
