Fernando Alonso, driver of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team, faced an unexpected problem with his car during qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This issue arose after Alonso crashed during the final practice session, casting doubt on his ability to participate in qualifying. Despite the team’s efforts to fix his car in time, Alonso struggled to control his speed during his second attempt, running off track and ending up in the gravel. As a result, he was unable to complete another lap and ended up with the slowest time of all drivers. Alonso, who moved up to 19th place due to penalties for other drivers, later revealed he was instructed to return to the pits due to an unspecified issue. He expressed frustration with the series of unfortunate events and acknowledged the hard work of his mechanics.

Aston Martin unveiled a comprehensive upgrade package this weekend, but teammate Lance Stroll failed to reach the necessary speed to qualify for Q2. However, Alonso is confident that the team’s developments have resulted in a greater improvement than their initial positions suggest. Alonso stated that the car felt faster during qualifying and that there is still some untapped potential. He mentioned that the team has extensive data from previous sessions to analyze and make further improvements before the next race in Monaco, which he expects to be challenging.

Recognizing that Imola is a difficult track for overtaking, Alonso anticipates a tough race tomorrow. He believes that starting from behind in Imola is one of the worst positions and compares it to Monaco, which is known for its limited overtaking opportunities. Alonso suggests that Singapore is even easier to overtake in comparison. Despite the challenges, he believes the race will provide valuable insights into the performance of the updated package.

When asked about the possibility of starting from the pit lane and making adjustments to the car setup, Alonso hinted that it could be an option for his team. He mentioned the benefits of avoiding potential accidents like the one that occurred in the Formula 2 race. Considering the limited availability of spare parts for Formula 1 teams, starting from the pit lane may be a strategic choice. However, Alonso believes that scoring points in the race may be unrealistic.
