Alonso prevê que Aston Martin resolverá problemas na F1 mais rápido com Lawrence Stroll.

Lawrence Stroll, the investor of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team, and Fernando Alonso, a team member, were spotted together during the Bahrain Grand Prix 2024 testing day. Alonso expressed his belief that Aston Martin will overcome their challenges faster than other Formula 1 teams, attributing this to the ambition of team owner Lawrence Stroll. Aston Martin initially emerged as a strong contender against Red Bull when Alonso joined, achieving six podiums in eight races. However, the team lost momentum and dropped to fifth place. Despite introducing upgrades throughout the season, Aston Martin couldn’t close the gap to the teams ahead. Alonso acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but maintained his confidence in Stroll Sr to lead a turnaround. Stroll, a Canadian billionaire who took over the team in 2018, has made significant investments, including establishing a state-of-the-art base. Alonso emphasized the complexity of the sport and drew parallels with McLaren’s challenges last year. He expressed confidence in Aston Martin’s leadership and predicted the team would solve their issues faster than others, thanks to Stroll’s competitive nature.

Alonso had a disastrous weekend in Imola earlier this month, suffering an accident during FP3 and making a mistake on his second lap, resulting in qualifying with the slowest time overall.

The two-time champion would start the race from the pit lane with a modified setup and essentially used the session as a test to try out Aston Martin’s latest upgrades.

While Alonso is willing to sacrifice his own race results for the long-term benefit of Aston Martin, he recognizes that there are occasions when he needs to deliver the best possible result.

“I believe we experienced a drop in performance compared to our competitors,” evaluated Alonso. “It seems that while we improved the performance of our car, the others took a bigger leap forward, causing us to slip in terms of positions.

“In my case, I admit that I did not perform well in these two races. I wasn’t driving well enough in Miami.

“And in Imola, it was more about looking for answers that sometimes take over when I know our goals will not be satisfactory.

“You see, when you’re not fighting for a position between the top five or seven, sometimes you shift your focus to testing and adjusting the car’s setup. I prefer to solve the car’s problems, sacrifice that particular weekend, and start from scratch next time, even if it means finishing ninth.

“And I believe that’s what happened in Imola during FP3, qualifying, and the race. On one hand, it is beneficial because it speeds up the process of correcting the problems. On the other hand, that weekend may result in zero points or slightly less competitive performance than usual.

“Therefore, it is important to find a balance between maximizing the package and the points available on normal weekends, even if it means finishing ninth.

“And on other weekends, we need to consider whether it’s worth giving up a ninth place to accelerate the car repairs.”
