Fernando Alonso, member of the Aston Martin F1 team, is optimistic about the team’s chances in the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. Despite recent difficulties, Alonso believes that the unique characteristics of the Monaco circuit could be advantageous for Aston Martin. In the past, Alonso has experienced both success and challenges at this location, so he knows that previous performances do not necessarily dictate the outcome of this weekend. Competition in Formula 1 is extremely fierce, with small time differences determining whether a team finishes in the top five or is eliminated in the first qualifying session. Therefore, it is difficult to make precise predictions about the team’s performance. However, Alonso has a positive outlook and is hopeful for a good performance in Monaco.

Aston Martin started the previous season as the closest competitor to Red Bull’s dominance, with Alonso coming close to beating Max Verstappen to pole position in Monaco. However, the two-time F1 champion dismissed the idea that he would prefer rainy conditions to make up for Aston Martin’s less competitive situation this year. “I would prefer it to be dry, even if that means I am slightly less competitive,” admitted Alonso. “Driving in Monaco when it’s wet is not very pleasant, but we’ll wait and see. I believe we are prepared for anything.”

Meanwhile, Alonso highlighted his strong qualifying performances at the beginning of the season and the challenging nature of overtaking in Monaco as reasons for his confidence. “There is no doubt that last year we had higher expectations than we have this year, or that the car seemed strong in low-speed corners in 2023,” he explained. “So Monaco was seen as an opportunity for us, but this year is uncertain. We’ve had our ups and downs so far, with excellent qualifying results like P3 in China about a month ago. So if we can replicate that kind of lap on Saturday and have the tires ready and warmed up for that initial performance lap, then the pace degradation and other factors on Sundays will be less problematic. Therefore, we remain optimistic that we can have a strong weekend and I am really looking forward to it.”
