Fernando Alonso, from the Aston Martin F1 team, is doing a seat test
Alonso’s name has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025, once the British driver’s move was confirmed. Despite prioritizing the renewal of his contract with Aston Martin, Alonso has not ruled out the possibility of a change.
Currently in his second year with Aston Martin and third since his return to Formula 1 in 2021 with Alpine, Alonso took a break from the sport for two years after the 2018 season, when he was still with McLaren.
As a Formula 1 champion in 2005 and 2006, Alonso has shown that age is not a barrier, delivering his best performance and achieving eight podiums in 2023, when the Aston Martin car was still competitive. However, the team’s development has been hindered since then.
His impressive track record makes him an attractive prospect for any Formula 1 team. Despite previously stating that he could continue racing until the age of 50, Alonso seems to have reconsidered due to the demanding nature of the sport, especially with the introduction of longer seasons and new regulations in 2026.
During a media session in Bahrain, Alonso was asked about his future plans and the likelihood of joining Mercedes in 2025. He responded by stating that he first needs to decide if he wants to continue racing, a decision he will make after a few more races.
Although he feels great at the moment, Alonso acknowledges the challenges of the demanding schedule. The new regulations in 2026 may also influence his decision. He intends to wait until after a few races before making a final determination.
Alonso will celebrate his 43rd birthday in July. With 378 Grand Prix races on his resume and 32 race wins, he is still chasing his 33rd victory, which has so far eluded him.
