David Alonso narrowly beats Colin Veijer to claim his fifth victory of the Moto3 season at Mugello. Meanwhile, Daniel Holgado’s race was hindered by a collision at Turn 1, resulting in a 14th place finish for him.
Alonso held his position at the start of the race, with Ivan Ortolá closely following, looking for opportunities to gain an advantage over the talented 18-year-old rider.
Despite Alonso’s impressive speed throughout the weekend, Ortolá managed to stay close during the first three laps.
A battle for third place ensued, with Veijer using the slipstream on his Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP bike to overtake Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furusato.
On the fourth lap, the race was red-flagged due to a dangerous collision between Filippo Farioli and Xabi Zurutuza at Turn 9. Farioli fell on the racing line, resulting in a collision with Zurutuza’s bike. Fortunately, all riders involved in the accident remained conscious, and Farioli was taken away on a stretcher by the medical team.
After the restart, Alonso once again took the lead at Turn 1. However, a collision between Jose Antonio Rueda and Stefano Napa resulted in both riders crashing early on. Holgado seemed to lose control of his bike, causing Rueda to be penalized with a double long lap penalty.
The race was shortened to 11 laps after the restart. Furusato and Veijer passed Alonso on the straight, leading a group of eight riders at the front.
Alonso made a strong comeback, overtaking his rivals and reclaiming the lead with a well-executed move at Turn 1 on the third lap.
Veijer and Furusato managed to pass Alonso at the long Turn 1, but Alonso fought back and regained the lead, creating a significant gap between him and the chasing group.
Despite dropping to sixth place, Veijer made an impressive recovery, setting fastest lap after fastest lap and reducing the gap to Alonso.
However, Veijer’s late surge was not enough, and Alonso secured his third consecutive victory, extending his lead in the championship standings.
Veijer’s second place brought him closer to Holgado in the standings, while Ryusei Yamanaka secured his first podium appearance in the Moto Grand Prix, finishing in third place.
Furusato achieved his best result since the season opener in Qatar, crossing the finish line in fourth place. David Muñoz and Ortolá finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Luca Lunetta finished seventh, narrowly missing out on a higher position, while Adrian Fernandez finished just behind him.
Australian rookie Jacob Roulston finished ninth, closely followed by Matteo Bertelle, who achieved his best result of the season in tenth place.
Angel Piqueras and Joel Kelso were close, with positions seventh to twelfth finishing within half a second of each other.
Riccardo Rossi scored his first points since Qatar, while Holgado’s attempts to recover points after his penalty resulted in a 14th place finish.
Rueda, who recovered from his incident at Turn 1, secured the final point, finishing just 0.060s behind Holgado at the finish line.
