Fernando Alonso expresses his excitement in reuniting with Honda at Aston Martin in Formula 1 in 2026. He sees it as a great pleasure to work again with the Japanese brand.

Aston Martin has announced that Alonso will continue to represent the British team as they enter the next phase of regulations in Formula 1. This partnership with Honda is a key factor in Alonso’s decision to stay with Aston Martin.

Initially, Alonso had joined McLaren with hopes that Honda’s return to F1 would bring back their past successes. However, McLaren faced issues with underpowered and unreliable power units, leading to Alonso’s famous comment about the ‘GP2 engine’ at Suzuka.

Despite the challenges, Honda reorganized after the premature end of their partnership with McLaren. They have since powered Red Bull to several championships. Alonso acknowledges Honda’s success in Formula 1 and the broader world of motorsport, which influenced his decision to stay with Aston Martin.

Alonso believes Honda will have a strong foundation for 2026, given their recent dominance in the sport. He also praises Honda’s capabilities in building impressive technology at their facility in Sakura. Additionally, Alonso looks forward to experiencing sustainable fuels in the future.

Overall, Alonso is excited about the prospect of working again with Honda and sees it as a promising partnership for the future.

“We have a strong partnership with Aramco, as I mentioned earlier. So, I see this as a mutually beneficial situation, and I have great respect for Japanese culture, as you probably all know.”

“We just got back from Japan, which is always a special race for me. I always wear a special helmet when I race there, and I even have a samurai tattoo on my back. There are always strong connections to Japan, and in 2026, that is especially appealing to me. After my experience with McLaren Honda and IndyCar, I now have the opportunity to work with them again, which brings me great pleasure.”

Alonso believes that Aston Martin’s growth, with its new state-of-the-art facility and its upcoming status as a factory team, puts them in a favorable position for future changes in the sport.

“We are entering uncharted territory with the new regulations, but if I had to choose, based on my instinct, I would choose our project, our engine, and our power unit,” he stated.

“First, because I believe they are dominating the sport currently, as I mentioned before, and they have a strong engine for Red Bull and AlphaTauri. And secondly, with the new fuels and regulations, they will have all the necessary tools to succeed. That’s how I see it.”

Alonso explained that his intention was to secure a deal that ensured he could compete with the next generation of cars in Formula 1 when he decided to continue his career in the series.

“I won’t lie, it was an important factor,” he declared. “Committing to a one-year project didn’t make sense to me.

“It’s not like I had other one-year offers or anything like that. From the first conversation with Aston, I made it clear that what attracted me to this project was everything we are building together. The new campus last year, the wind tunnel this year, and the potential new regulations in 2026, along with Honda’s entry as a partner.”

“For me, it was essential to enter the new regulations with a new project, a new wind tunnel, and Honda as a partner. It was something that was very important to me.”
