Alonso considerou cancelar última tentativa na qualificação da F1 na China.

Fernando Alonso, representing the Aston Martin F1 Team AMR24, reflected on his decision-making process during the qualifying session for the Chinese Grand Prix. Despite considering abandoning his final lap, Alonso managed to secure third place on the starting grid. He finished 0.488s behind Max Verstappen’s pole position time, but secured a spot on the second row, behind the Red Bull duo. Alonso admitted that mistakes in the initial corners made him question whether he should continue with the lap that eventually gave him his best starting position of the year. He acknowledged that the lap was good, but not perfect.

Alonso had a moment of instability in turns 1 and 2, which caused him to lose control of the car. Even in turn 3, he contemplated whether it would be better to abort the lap and return to the pits or continue pushing forward. However, he decided to brake late in turn 6 in an attempt to make up for lost time. He managed to recover a tenth of a second and decided to continue. In turns 9 and 10, he recovered another tenth of a second and knew he needed to give his best in the final two corners. This effort was crucial, as the competition was fierce within a two-tenths difference, with six cars vying for the lead in that group. Despite the imperfections, Alonso expressed satisfaction with his lap and his performance in qualifying.

Alonso believes that if he had avoided the mistakes at the beginning of his lap in Q3, he could have closed the gap between him and the two Red Bull drivers. However, he anticipates that Aston Martin’s performance in the race will not match their position in the standings. He expects to drop to seventh, eighth, or ninth place, which he considers the natural order of things. Alonso admitted that the team is currently slower than Ferrari, McLaren, and possibly Mercedes, despite often outperforming them in qualifying. He emphasized the need to wait and see how quickly the other teams catch up and how long they can defend their positions. This scenario has repeated itself in the first four races and Alonso hopes the fifth race will not be any different.

Alonso will need to be cautious in his defensive maneuvers due to a penalty he received for a dive on Carlos Sainz during the Sprint. Although he disagrees with the decision, the two-time F1 champion remains excited about his performance in moving his Aston Martin AMR24 up the grid. He sees this as a source of encouragement for the future. Alonso expressed his happiness and pride in the team, emphasizing their determination and refusal to give up. Despite their current position as the fourth or fifth fastest team, they continue to strive for improvement. Today’s result is a testament to their ongoing efforts.
