David Alonso conquered Daniel Holgado’s victory in the last corner of the Moto3 Qatar Grand Prix, securing the first honors of the lightweight class of 2024. The CFMoto rider maintained his position as one of the top riders throughout the 16-lap race, battling for the lead with Daniel Holgado of Tech 3 on several occasions.
His chance of victory seemed unlikely as the pack started the final lap, as he was pushed back to sixth place by several competitors while the leading group tried to organize. With the help of a late crash involving Adrian Fernandez of Leopard and Vicente Perez, he quickly regained his position among the top riders.
Overtaking Taiyo Furusato of Honda Team Asia with just a few corners remaining in the race, he then set his sights on leader Holgado. Choosing to make his move at the last moment, Alonso skillfully maneuvered his bike to overtake the Spaniard in the final corner.
He executed the pass perfectly and managed to exit the corner with enough speed to cross the finish line just 0.041s ahead of Holgado, with Furusato completing the podium.
Ricardo Rossi had a great performance for CIP Green Power team, securing fourth place in his first race of the year. Collin Veijer of Husqvarna finished fifth, while Stefano Nepa came in sixth. Tatsuki Suzuki was the last rider to stay with the leading group, finishing in seventh place.
Joel Kelso initially kept up with the leaders, but had tire issues in the final stages of the race, finishing about eight seconds behind the front pack. He narrowly escaped being caught by Ivan Ortola, who surprisingly finished ninth despite crashing early in the race after being hit by Jose Antonio Rueda.
Ivan Ortola lost control of his KTM Ajo motorcycle in the middle of the corner and crashed, causing Ortola to also fall. However, Ortola quickly remounted and set an impressive pace, finishing just ten seconds off the victory. Australian rookie Jacob Roulstone completed the top ten in the second entry of the Tech 3 team.
David Munoz failed to score points after having to start from the pit lane due to a problem with his bike on the grid. Ryusei Yamanaka also missed out on a good result in the top ten after crashing at Turn 3 in the final laps, losing control of his bike as he exited the corner.
