AJ Allmendinger is back in the big leagues. Kaulig Racing confirmed on Thursday that the veteran driver will return to full-time NASCAR Cup Series competition next year, marking a significant moment in Allmendinger’s storied career. While the team hasn’t yet revealed all the details, this announcement has already set the racing world abuzz.
Allmendinger, currently sixth in the Xfinity Series standings, has been a powerhouse for Kaulig Racing, racking up 15 wins since 2019. His success in the Xfinity Series has kept him in the spotlight, and now he’s ready to take another shot at the Cup Series. This year, Allmendinger has made 10 Cup Series starts in the No. 16 Chevrolet, showcasing his skill and determination in limited appearances.
The road back to the Cup Series has been anything but smooth for Allmendinger. After being released by JTG Daugherty Racing following the 2018 season, his future in NASCAR seemed uncertain. However, a part-time gig with Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series in 2019 quickly turned into a full-time ride by 2021. Along the way, Allmendinger proved his worth by winning on the Indianapolis road course in 2021, delivering Kaulig Racing its first-ever Cup Series victory. He followed that up with another stunning win on the Charlotte road course last year.
Kaulig Racing currently fields two full-time entries in the Cup Series, with the Nos. 16 and 31 cars. While Daniel Hemric has been behind the wheel of the No. 31 this year, Allmendinger has shared driving duties in the No. 16 car. With this new development, it’s clear that Kaulig Racing is betting big on Allmendinger’s experience and talent to elevate their Cup Series program.
As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Allmendinger as he looks to capitalize on this opportunity and make his mark once again in the Cup Series. This return could be the comeback story of the year, as Allmendinger aims to add to his legacy and bring more victories to Kaulig Racing.
