Formula 1 Shakes Up 2027 Calendar: Algarve International Circuit to Replace Zandvoort!

In a stunning turn of events, the Algarve International Circuit is set to reclaim its spot on the prestigious Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, leaving the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort in the dust after just six thrilling years. The announcement has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, as fans eagerly anticipate the return of this iconic Portuguese venue near Portimao.

This isn’t Algarve’s first rodeo; the circuit previously hosted F1 races during the tumultuous COVID-19 seasons of 2020 and 2021, with none other than the legendary Lewis Hamilton piloting his Mercedes to victory on both occasions. The podiums were electrifying, featuring the likes of Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, making every race a nail-biter.

The Portuguese Grand Prix has a rich history that now continues to unfold, marking its 19th and 20th races. While 13 of those have been staged at the renowned Estoril circuit from 1984 to 1996, the Algarve track is set to bring a fresh wave of excitement. The earlier races, held from 1958 to 1960, were a mix of street circuits in Porto and the treacherous bends of Lisbon’s Monsanto Park Circuit, setting the stage for what is to come.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed his enthusiasm for the circuit’s return, stating, “I’m delighted to see Portimao back on the Formula 1 calendar, igniting the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase.” His remarks highlight not just a revival, but a celebration of the sport’s growth in Portugal. The Algarve circuit is famed for its challenging layout, delivering adrenaline-pumping action from the first corner to the chequered flag, ensuring fans remain on the edge of their seats.

Echoing this sentiment, Jaime Costa, CEO of the Algarve circuit, couldn’t hide his excitement, proclaiming, “We are thrilled to welcome Formula 1 back to Portugal and to the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.” He emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “The Portuguese Grand Prix will showcase the excellence of our circuit and the passion of our fans, delivering a powerful boost for our tourism, region, and community.”

Costa further stated that this monumental achievement is a testament to the unwavering support from the Portuguese Government, which has been instrumental in making this dream a reality. The circuit’s unique “rollercoaster” layout is poised to challenge the best drivers in the world, promising a spectacle that fans will rave about for years to come.

With the Algarve International Circuit back in the fold, the motorsport world is buzzing with anticipation. Will this be the spark that reignites the fire of Formula 1 in Portugal? One thing’s for sure: fans can’t wait for the unforgettable moments that lie ahead on this thrilling track!
