Algarve International Circuit returns to F1 calendar: Zandvoort’s shocking exit revealed!

F1 Shakes Up the 2027 Calendar: Algarve International Circuit to Replace Zandvoort!

In a shocking twist for motorsport fans, the Formula 1 calendar is set to undergo a monumental change as the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal takes over the coveted spot previously held by the Zandvoort circuit in the Netherlands for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This thrilling development marks the end of Zandvoort’s short-lived six-year presence, paving the way for a revival of one of F1’s most exhilarating tracks.

Nestled in the stunning landscape of Portimao, the Algarve International Circuit is no stranger to the F1 scene, having previously hosted races during the tumultuous COVID-19 years of 2020 and 2021. Both events were spectacularly dominated by none other than Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, with fellow competitors Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen consistently battling for podium positions, showcasing the fierce competition that defines the sport.

The upcoming Portuguese Grand Prix will be a historic milestone, as it marks the 19th and 20th races held in the country. It’s crucial to note that 13 of these races took place at the iconic Estoril circuit from 1984 to 1996, while the early years of F1 in Portugal saw thrilling races in Porto and Lisbon, with their challenging street circuits.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali couldn’t contain his excitement about the return of Portimao to the F1 calendar. He stated, “I’m delighted to see Portimao return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase. The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats. The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix is the highest that it has ever been.”

Jaime Costa, the CEO of the Algarve circuit, echoed this enthusiasm, emphasizing the significance of F1’s return to Portugal. “We are thrilled to welcome Formula 1 back to Portugal and to the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. The Portuguese Grand Prix will showcase the excellence of our circuit and the passion of our fans, delivering a powerful boost for our tourism, region, and community. This achievement was only made possible with the continuous support – since the beginning – of the Portuguese Government.”

Costa continued, highlighting the track’s unique features: “Portimao’s unique ‘rollercoaster’ layout will challenge the best drivers in the world and create a spectacle that fans will love. We look forward to creating unforgettable moments and setting new standards of excellence on and off the track.”

This dramatic shift in the F1 landscape not only promises thrilling races but also revitalizes the Portuguese motorsport scene, ensuring that fans can indulge in the high-octane excitement that comes with Formula 1. With the Algarve International Circuit poised to make its grand return, the countdown to the unforgettable racing experiences of 2027 and 2028 has officially begun! Get ready, racing enthusiasts, because the future of F1 is revving up in Portugal!
