Alfa Romeo is the latest brand to slam the brakes on its ambitions to become 100% electric, which was initially planned for 2027, now embracing a new “multi-energy” strategy.
According to “Automotive News Europe,” which cites Alfa Romeo’s head in the U.S., Chris Feuell, the Stellantis brand will present a strategy that includes offering gasoline models, plug-in hybrids, and 100% electric vehicles.
However, Chris Feuell noted that for the brand’s network of 110 dealerships in the U.S., “it would be very difficult for them to survive with a portfolio solely of 100% electric vehicles”.
It is worth recalling that initially, Alfa Romeo planned that starting in 2025, all new models from the Italian brand would be exclusively 100% electric, and by 2027, there would be no combustion engine Alfas available for sale.
However, the plans for the next generation of the Stelvio SUV and the Giulia sedan, originally expected to feature 100% electric powertrains, are being revised to include hybrid and internal combustion engine variants. Both models will be built on Stellantis’s STLA Large platform, the same one that underpins the Jeep Wagoneer S and the Dodge Charger.
Alfa Romeo’s decision to revise its strategy comes at a time when the transition to electric mobility is experiencing a decline in demand in Europe and the U.S., forcing automakers to reassess their plans.
In the case of Alfa Romeo in the US, Chris Feuell admitted that the biggest concern among dealers, with whom he met at the NADA Show on January 26, is the network, after a 19% drop in sales in 2024, totaling 8,865 units, marking the fourth consecutive year of declining sales. The situation was even worse in the fourth quarter of 2024, when the Italian brand recorded a 38% decline compared to the same period in 2023.
