Alex Dunne Stripped of Spa Win Over Technical Breach; Lindblad Declared Winner

McLaren junior’s Feature race victory revoked after stewards confirm failure to engage mandated start system

SPA‑FRANCORCHAMPS, BELGIUM — What began as a spectacular wet‑weather win in Belgium has turned sour for Alex Dunne, as the Rodin Motorsport driver was handed a 10‑second time penalty after the Feature Race stewards concluded he breached both Article 1.6.1 of the technical regs and Article 11.15 of the user manual. Dunne failed to engage the required start-set‑up system during the formation lap, an infraction confirmed after review.

Team personnel defended the oversight, citing race control’s decision to run the lap behind the safety car and initiate a rolling start—a scenario under which they believed the system needn’t be activated. However, the stewards deemed that procedural rules applied regardless, and enforced the time penalty, relegating Dunne from first to 10th in the final classification and costing him 25 vital championship points.

🏁 Arvid Lindblad Inherits Victory: Championship Tightens Dramatically

With Dunne demoted, Arvid Lindblad of Campos Racing was declared the race winner. Lindblad’s adjusted points haul now places him firmly back into title contention, just 14 points behind new leader Leonardo Fornaroli.

Post-penalty standings for the top five are now razor-close:

1. Leonardo Fornaroli – 123 pts
2. Richard Verschoor – 122 pts
3. Jak Crawford – 116 pts
4. Alex Dunne – 113 pts
5. Luke Browning – 110 pts
6. Arvid Lindblad – 109 pts

Lindblad’s rise to sixth—a mere two points behind Browning—means the top six drivers are separated by just 14 points, intensifying the hunt as the championship heads into its closing rounds.

🌧️ From Spa Wet-Wizard to Penalised

Earlier on race day, under notoriously challenging wet conditions, Dunne had led from pole and appeared to capitalize on his masterful wet driving to claim the win. His pole time of 1:57.151 set a commanding tone for the race.

Yet, victory gave way to controversy as the stewards diligently reviewed formation lap system compliance—ultimately ruling against Dunne and reshaping the result.

📌 The Fallout: What This Means for the Title Fight

  • Lindblad’s promotion to winner lifts his championship hopes, marking him as a rising threat in the title mix.
  • Dunne’s penalty not only removed his race-winning points but also raises questions about procedural consistency in changing weather or starting conditions.
  • Fornaroli, Verschoor, Crawford, Browning, Dunne, and Lindblad are now locked in a tight scrap, with every upcoming round crucial.

✅ Final Feature Race Results (Top 5 After Penalty)

  1. Arvid Lindblad (Campos Racing) – Winner
  2. Leonardo Fornaroli (Invicta Racing)
  3. Richard Verschoor (MP Motorsport)
  4. Jak Crawford (DAMS Lucas Oil)
  5. Luke Browning (Hitech TGR)

Alex Dunne, originally first, drops to P10 following the post-race time penalty.

From wet-weather hero to penalized protagonist: Alex Dunne’s Spa weekend is a cautionary tale, but motorsports thrives on exacting precision. With the championship tighter than ever, the drama is far from over.
