Williams driver Alex Albon has cast doubt on Lando Norris’s chances of winning the 2024 Formula 1 world championship, citing the formidable challenge posed by Max Verstappen. Despite Norris’s impressive performances this season in the quick McLaren MCL38, Albon believes that it will be difficult for the young Briton to overcome Verstappen’s dominance in the final stretch of the season.

Currently sitting second in the standings, Norris trails Verstappen by 78 points with 10 races remaining. While McLaren has shown remarkable pace, Albon remains skeptical that Norris can bridge the gap. He pointed out that although the Red Bull car may not appear as dominant as before, Verstappen’s exceptional driving skills continue to mask any weaknesses. Albon emphasized that the real competition between McLaren and Red Bull is likely to be in the Constructors’ Championship, where team performance plays a crucial role, rather than the Drivers’ Championship.

Albon expressed his excitement about the increased competition at the top of the standings, noting that the second half of the season promises to be engaging and fiercely contested. He welcomed the shift from a single team’s dominance to a more balanced fight among the top teams, which he believes will make each race more thrilling for fans.

Reflecting on recent years, Albon noted that the most exciting battles often took place in the midfield, as Red Bull frequently went unchallenged at the front. However, this season has seen a change, with closer and more intense battles at the top. While Verstappen’s presence at the top is unsurprising, Albon acknowledged that Norris is experiencing the pressure of competing for the championship for the first time, adding a new layer of challenge for the 24-year-old.

Albon observed that the competition this season initially seemed similar to last year, but McLaren’s significant progress has made a substantial impact. With both McLaren drivers consistently finishing high, Norris now finds himself in an unfamiliar and challenging position near the top of the standings. However, Albon believes that the combination of Verstappen’s experience and skill will make it difficult for Norris to claim the title.
