Williams driver Alex Albon caused a stir during the Miami Grand Prix by questioning the legality of the Mercedes W16 in a bold radio message. As he followed George Russell’s Mercedes, Albon couldn’t hide his astonishment, saying, “I don’t know how that Merc is legal.”
While Albon expressed his surprise at the Mercedes’ performance, F1 newcomer Kimi Antonelli made history by securing pole position at just 18 years old. Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, also impressed by placing the sister W16 in fifth position on the grid.
Despite starting from P8, Albon admitted to feeling slightly disappointed with his performance in sprint qualifying. He remarked, “I thought my lap felt pretty good, but we were a bit further away than I would have liked.” However, Albon remains optimistic about Williams’ chances, stating, “Yes, we can fight for points this weekend. I think that’s our target.”
On the other hand, Antonelli, the youngest polesitter in F1 history, expressed his elation at his achievement, saying, “I’m feeling over the moon.” The Italian driver aims to secure his first victory in Formula 1 with Mercedes and is focused on maintaining his performance in the upcoming race.
As the Miami Grand Prix unfolds, tensions rise as Albon questions the Mercedes’ legality, Antonelli aims for victory, and the battle for crucial championship points intensifies on the track.
