Alexander Albon, the Thai driver for Williams Racing, revealed that he engaged in discussions with other Formula 1 teams before deciding to extend his contract with Williams. The team recently announced that Albon has signed a new long-term agreement, ensuring his presence during the next regulatory change in 2026. Despite being linked to Mercedes and Red Bull, Albon made the decision to step away from the driver market and show his loyalty to Williams. Although he acknowledged there were talks with other teams, Albon emphasized that staying with Williams was the best choice for his future.

There were speculations that Red Bull had requested an option on Albon’s services, potentially putting the Williams driver in contention to replace Sergio Perez. However, Albon reaffirmed his commitment to Williams’ efforts to regain competitiveness in Formula 1 and denied being enticed by the opportunity to return to Red Bull.

When asked if he could have waited for that opportunity, Albon stated: “No, it all comes down to experience. I believe looking elsewhere and considering possibilities can be complicated. Especially given the current situation regarding available seats. At Mercedes, there is only one seat. Many factors need to align, and there are numerous paths to consider.”

Albon believes that addressing his future prospects early in the season will allow him and Williams to focus on improving the team’s performance on track. The Grove-based team has been unable to sustain the progress made in the previous season and has not scored points in the first six races of this year.

When asked if there was a moment of hesitation in signing a new contract with Williams, Albon replied: “No. Of course, I kept my options open and talked to other teams. However, discussions took place quite early this year. I would consider signing a contract in May still quite early. The main focus was simply moving forward. We have a significant journey ahead, and we are not hiding from that fact. It is gratifying to be able to face the rest of this year with a clear mind and focus on the areas within the team that need change, progress, and development. From a personal point of view as a driver, we need to identify the aspects of the car that need improvement and address them. When you are involved in contract negotiations and things like that, these aspects do not receive much attention. Now, there is stability and a clear focus on building the team. James [Vowles, Team Principal] has mentioned before, but he is determined to have me as part of this journey and project. I believe that my role here goes beyond just being a race driver. It involves much more than that.”
