Alexander Albon, Williams Racing FW46 driver, expressed his frustration after being involved in Carlos Sainz’s spin during the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The incident compromised Albon’s chances of scoring points in the race. Despite Ferrari’s poor performance, Albon managed to qualify for Q3 for the second consecutive weekend and secured the 10th starting position. He showed maturity in his driving, taking advantage of changing conditions and making a smart move to gain two positions in one corner. However, his race took a turn when Sergio Perez’s wide line at Turn 6 compromised Albon’s racing line, allowing Sainz to overtake him. This ultimately impacted Albon’s race, as Sainz spun in the same corner and collided with the Williams car. Reflecting on the collision, Albon described it as frustrating, especially considering Williams’ double retirement due to Logan Sargeant’s earlier accident. Albon believed that, despite not taking many risks with their strategy, they made good decisions throughout the race. He mentioned Haas’ gamble with rain tires early on and other drivers who stayed out on intermediates instead of pitting for fresh tires. Albon appreciated the team’s efforts to recover positions and fight for points. He was enjoying the race and felt there was still a lot at stake. However, the consecutive incidents in the same corner dampened his spirits.
In the first incident, I lost my position due to the need to avoid a collision. Shortly after, Carlos spun on the track.
I anticipated that he would stop, but he kept spinning, causing me to change my initial move. I expected to maintain my position, but as he approached, I realized he would likely collide with my right rear. I felt powerless in the situation.
It’s frustrating because there were definitely points available today.
However, despite the disappointment, Albon acknowledged that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was suitable for the FW45 car. He found encouragement in Williams emerging as a strong competitor in the midfield.
The former Red Bull driver revealed that the team will introduce updates in the upcoming races to recover from a challenging start to the season.
When asked if he could find confidence in his overall performance in the race, Albon replied: “Yes, definitely. We should have scored points in the last two races.
In the previous race, we managed to score points. In this race, it seems like we were unlucky not to score. I believe this is partly due to the nature of the track. I’m curious to see how we will fare in Barcelona.
That being said, we still have improvements and updates on the way. We haven’t made significant changes so far this year, especially in terms of aerodynamics. I remain hopeful.”
