Alex Albon, Williams Racing driver, shared that the team is taking a unique approach in their quest to once again become a leading force in Formula 1. Despite facing initial challenges with the new regulations last season, Williams managed to climb to seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship under Albon’s leadership. However, the decision to overhaul the concept of the car to create a more complete FW46 resulted in a drop in competitiveness compared to their rivals. Williams’ efforts to recover from a scoreless start to the season were hampered by delays in receiving parts and an overweight car. Nevertheless, Albon signed a new contract with Williams and firmly believes in the team’s untapped potential. He expressed his confidence in the project and the people involved, emphasizing that Williams has the capability to reach greater heights than they are currently demonstrating. Albon’s extension with the team reflects his belief in their future success. Williams Team Principal, James Vowles, has been working to modernize the outdated infrastructure that has hindered the team in recent years, in preparation for the major rule changes that will take place in 2026. Albon hopes that these significant renovations will position Williams to compete strongly with the new cars from the outset. When asked about the possibility of winning with Williams, Albon acknowledged that it will take time, especially considering the dominant position of teams like Red Bull. He recognized that Williams currently has some weaknesses that need to be addressed to achieve that level of success.
In terms of immediate success, the answer is no. We must take practical steps forward. However, we are exploring innovative approaches to establish ourselves as a leading team. If my contract is long enough to achieve success, we will see. But if I realize that we are heading in the right direction, that is another point to consider. I believe it may take some time, even into next year. However, by 2026, I am confident that all our systems will be operating effectively, marking a significant improvement.
Albon believes that the planned reform by Vowles at Williams has come at the perfect time, allowing the British team to have a solid foundation before the new regulations. When asked if the imminent rule change could be a game-changer, Albon responded: “I believe all teams believe that.” It is widely recognized that 2026 presents an opportunity for teams to make a significant impact. Realistically, the key to success in 2026 lies in establishing a solid team foundation. Williams may not have been in that position a few years ago, but we are about to reach it. We have a year and a half to get to that point. Furthermore, I am hopeful that the Mercedes power unit will be formidable, giving us another year to understand and adapt to the new regulations.
