Four-time Formula 1 world champion Alain Prost believes Max Verstappen carries the same blunt honesty and direct personality as the late Niki Lauda, drawing a striking comparison between two of the sport’s most legendary figures.
The 27-year-old Red Bull superstar has dominated F1 for the last four seasons, earning comparisons to Lauda, Schumacher, Senna, and even Prost himself. But while Prost is reluctant to compare drivers from different generations, he admits that Verstappen’s no-nonsense approach to racing and media presence is reminiscent of Lauda’s legendary demeanor.
“I never want to compare drivers from different eras, let me be clear. But Max is like Niki in terms of being direct, no doubt about that. When you asked Lauda something, the answer was always honest.”
Prost: “Verstappen Makes an Impression Every Time He Speaks”
Beyond his on-track dominance, Verstappen has become known for his brutally honest takes, never shying away from criticizing his own team, rivals, or F1’s governing body.
Prost believes this fearlessness in speaking his mind sets Verstappen apart:
“Verstappen, as the English say, makes an impression with what he says. On the rest, I can’t judge.”
While Prost refrained from comparing on-track performances, Verstappen’s relentless, take-no-prisoners mentality echoes Lauda’s era of pure, unfiltered competition—a trait that has made both figures respected and feared in the paddock.
Matching Prost’s Record—But Destined to Surpass It
Verstappen’s 2024 championship win secured his fourth consecutive title, placing him in an elite club of drivers who have won four or more championships—including Prost himself.
But rather than feeling any rivalry, the French legend fully expects Verstappen to eclipse his achievements.
“It’s normal when it’s someone like him, a very fast driver who from his first laps showed he had something extra. He is a great champion, he has shown he is the best, so sharing four titles with someone like him doesn’t create any problem for me. I am sure he will be able to surpass me, and in the next few years, he definitely will.”
Can Verstappen Keep His Dynasty Alive in 2025?
Despite his dominance, Verstappen’s 2024 season wasn’t without struggles. Red Bull suffered a mid-season dip in performance, allowing Ferrari and McLaren to close the gap, while the team also dealt with internal turmoil behind the scenes.
With Mercedes actively pursuing Verstappen for 2026 and Ferrari ramping up its bid for championship contention, 2025 could be his most challenging title defense yet.
But if Verstappen can match Lauda’s resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity, then a fifth consecutive world title could be within reach.
Prost, for one, has no doubt that the Dutchman is destined for even greater heights.
“He has something extra. He is a great champion, and I have no doubt he will continue to prove it.”
