/ After completing four of the 12 hours of racing at Sebring, Jack Aitken of #31 Cadillac Racing maintained his position at the front of the second race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship of the year.
The race continued to provide excitement and incidents in the four different classes of the WeatherTech Championship.
In the GTP class, Porsche Penske employed strategic tactics, as the Cadillacs from Whelen and Chip Ganassi Racing dominated the lead during the first part of the 12-hour race.
It was only in the fourth hour, during a pit stop, that Dane Cameron in the Porsche #7 took the lead during the third caution period of the race.
Cameron’s team deliberately refueled the #7 car with little gas to secure the lead, while Cadillacs #01 and #31 V-Series.R, driven by Scott Dixon and Jack Aitken, respectively, made their own pit stops.
On the restart, Aitken aggressively challenged Cameron on the front straight and managed to overtake Porsche #7 at Turn 17, thanks to the superior grip of Cadillac #31 on the inside line.
Dixon caught up to Cameron and secured the second position, as Porsche #7 struggled to keep up with the Cadillacs, which showed better composure in terms of handling.
There was drama for the BMW M Team RLL #24 when Jesse Krohn was forced to make an unscheduled stop after being rear-ended while braking to avoid a spinning McLaren and Porsche.
At the end of the fourth hour, Jack Aitken led the race in Cadillac #31 V-Series.R, followed by Scott Dixon in Cadillac #01 and Richard Westbrook in the JDC Miller MotorSports Porsche 963 in third position.
In the LMP2 category, the battle for the lead continued between Matt Brabham in the Oreca 07 #99 from AO Racing, and Nico Pino in the Oreca #2 from United Autosports USA, during the third hour.
Meanwhile, the winners of the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Oreca #18 from Era Motorsport, found themselves once again at the front of the pack, with Ryan Dalziel in third position, driving the Oreca #22 from United Autosports USA.
A third yellow flag period was triggered when Lilou Widoux, in the Oreca 07 #88 from Richard Mille AF Corse, stopped in the escape area of Turn 7, becoming the third car to retire from the race.
The Oreca #99 from AO Racing received a drive-through penalty for not properly securing the fire extinguisher.
After the restart, Mikkel Jensen, in the Oreca #11 from TDS Racing, took the lead in the LMP2 class, with Bjoy Garg in the Oreca #22 from United Autosports USA in second position.
At the end of the fourth hour, a fourth yellow flag was triggered when the Ligier JS P217 #33 from Sean Creech Motorsport, driven by Lance Wilsey, stopped at Turn 16 after making contact with another competitor.
Jensen maintained the lead in LMP2, followed by Tom Dillmann in the Oreca #52 from Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen and Rene Lindh in the Oreca #81 from DragonSpeed.
In the GTD Pro class, the battle positions were relatively defined within the combined group of two GTD classes.
After a minor incident between the McLaren 720S #9 from Pfaff driven by James Hinchliffe and the Porsche 911 #86 from MDK driven by Klaus Bachler, the McLaren once again had to go to the pits for repairs, as it had already faced issues earlier in the race that had left it behind.
The BMW M4 #1 from Paul Miller Racing, driven by Neil Verhagen, was leading in GTD Pro, followed by Antonio Garcia in the Corvette Z06 GT3.R #3 and Daniel Serra in the Ferrari 296 #62 from Risi Competizione.
In the GTD class, the Winward Racing #57, driven by Indy Dontje, was in the lead, followed by the Ferraris 296 GT3 #023 from Triasi Competizione (Alessio Rovera) and #34 from Conquest Racing (Cedric Sbirrazzuoli).
