Against All Odds: Verstappen Eyes Championship with Slower Red Bull and Controversy; Jos Verstappen – “Max will do everything to win the title”

Max Verstappen has fought his way to the top of the 2024 drivers’ standings, holding a crucial 47-point lead despite Red Bull’s slower car compared to rivals Ferrari and McLaren. His resilience and aggressive racing style have kept him in contention, although this weekend’s Mexico GP saw the reigning champion embroiled in yet another on-track controversy, leading to a contentious 20-second penalty.

The harsh penalties, assigned by the FIA after several moves deemed overly aggressive, left Verstappen facing fierce criticism. Yet, former racer and father Jos Verstappen firmly backed his son’s approach, arguing that Max has no choice but to push the limits to secure the title for Red Bull. “Max has to drive the way he wants. He has to do this because the car is not good enough, and he does everything he can to win the title,” Jos stated. Verstappen Sr. also expressed frustration with the stewards, suggesting his son faces unwarranted scrutiny each time he pushes the envelope on the track.

Despite the penalties, Verstappen has maintained a strong stance, affirming that he remains true to his goals both on and off the circuit. His Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, echoed this sentiment, contesting the FIA’s decisions at the Mexican GP and urging the governing body to rethink its approach to racing incidents.

Horner pointed to a fundamental principle of racing physics: the inside line, he argued, traditionally grants drivers control over the corner. “If you’ve got the inside line, you control the corner. It’s one of the principles in the physics of racing,” he explained, insisting that the current assessment tactics need refinement.

As the season charges towards its final four races, Verstappen faces a fierce fight with McLaren’s Lando Norris, who’s been hot on his heels for the championship title. With Interlagos up next, Verstappen knows every point is vital as he strives to break his 10-race winless streak and defend his crown against the odds. In what’s shaping up to be a thrilling showdown, all eyes will be on how the FIA navigates its rules and how Verstappen navigates his rivals.
