Adrien Fourmaux’s Rally Sweden campaign went from contender to catastrophe in just a few hours.
The Frenchman was firmly in the fight for victory before a bizarre mistake and an unfortunate snowbank incident sent his rally spiraling.
Helmet Drama Kills Momentum
Fourmaux’s troubles began in Saturday morning’s final stage, when he realized he hadn’t fastened his helmet strap.
A mistake that simple is virtually unheard of at the elite level of rallying, but once he noticed it, he had no choice but to stop and fix it.
By the time he got back up to speed, his shot at the podium was already slipping away.
From Stage Winner to Snowbank Disaster
Despite the morning setback, Fourmaux rebounded spectacularly, winning the first stage of Saturday’s afternoon loop.
But just a few corners into the next stage, his rally unraveled again.
“In one corner, I went to hit the snowbank, but then it grabbed the front,” he explained. “For like 60 meters, the front was still in the snowbank, snowbank, snowbank.”
And then, it was over.
The snowbank pulled the car in deeper, leaving him helpless.
“There were no spectators, we tried everything—we moved all the snow behind and under the car—but after 50 minutes of trying, we couldn’t get it out.”
Did the Helmet Incident Rattle Him?
After his morning blunder, was Fourmaux pushing too hard to recover lost time?
“Hard to say now, but yeah, probably,” he admitted. “We did a really good first stage, so I wanted to keep the same pace.”
Unfortunately, that eagerness may have cost him.
The Road Ahead: Can Fourmaux Salvage Points?
Despite the setback, Fourmaux isn’t giving up.
He will restart on Sunday, targeting Super Sunday and Powerstage points.
“We’re going to try tomorrow anyway,” he said. “If the road conditions are like Friday, why not? If it’s like today, it will be difficult, but we’re going to try.”
Final Thoughts: A Weekend to Forget for Fourmaux
From a simple helmet mistake to a snowbank nightmare, Fourmaux’s Rally Sweden has been a case study in how quickly fortunes can turn in the WRC.
Now, his focus shifts to damage control and salvaging points—but there’s no doubt that this will be a rally he’ll want to put behind him as fast as possible.
