Adrien Fourmaux Delivers Stunning Victory Over Kalle Rovanperä in Rallye National Hivernal du Dévoluy

Adrien Fourmaux, driving the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 for the first time, capped off an unforgettable performance last weekend by claiming victory at the Rallye National Hivernal du Dévoluy. The Frenchman not only secured his maiden win with Hyundai but also triumphed over two-time world champion Kalle Rovanperä, showcasing his skill and adaptability in treacherous wintry conditions.

A Hard-Fought Victory Against the Odds

The rally, based near Gap, France, featured two days and 10 stages of some of the most challenging winter conditions Fourmaux has ever faced. From snow-covered roads to melting slush and treacherous black ice, the event demanded precision and adaptability.

Fourmaux seized the lead on the second stage and never looked back, finishing 15.5 seconds ahead of Rovanperä. For the 28-year-old, the victory was not just about the result but also about mastering a car he had driven for the first time earlier in the week.

“To begin with, the car wasn’t set up for me,” Fourmaux explained. “It was giving some understeer at the entry to the corner and then quite snappy oversteer at the exit. We worked throughout the event on the geometry, the bars, the springs, and the differential. By the end, I was really comfortable.”

Adapting to the Hyundai i20 N Rally1

Fourmaux’s win is even more impressive considering his limited time with the Hyundai i20 N Rally1. After a brief rollout session on Tuesday and shakedown on Friday, the Frenchman had to adapt to a car not initially tailored to his driving style. Through constant adjustments, he and the team found the right balance to take on the event’s unpredictable conditions.

“This was not an easy event to learn the car,” Fourmaux said. “It was one of the most difficult small Monte Carlos I’ve done. Proper snow in the morning, melting during the day, and black ice in the evening—it was a proper test.”

By softening the car’s setup and making incremental adjustments, Fourmaux gained confidence as the rally progressed.

Beating a World Champion

The victory was particularly sweet for Fourmaux, who bested Rovanperä, a driver intimately familiar with his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 and widely regarded as one of the fastest in the world.

“I didn’t expect to beat Kalle because he knows the car,” Fourmaux admitted. “It was really nice to have him there to compare our times. Winning against him is really positive—we can only be glad for this result.”

A Confidence Boost Ahead of 2024

The victory couldn’t have come at a better time for Fourmaux. Not only does it validate his skills against a top-tier opponent, but it also gives him a strong foundation heading into the 2024 season. The win has boosted his confidence and solidified his place within the Hyundai camp.

“I’m happy with the step we have made,” he said. “This win means I’ll enjoy Christmas a little more this year!”

Fourmaux’s First Step Toward a New Era

For Hyundai, Fourmaux’s performance is a promising sign that the team is well-positioned to challenge Toyota’s dominance. For Fourmaux himself, it’s a statement that he belongs among the sport’s elite. With a victory like this in his back pocket, the Frenchman has set the stage for an exciting 2024—and perhaps an even brighter future.

Can Adrien Fourmaux maintain this momentum and emerge as a key contender next season? If his performance in Dévoluy is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes.
