Adrian Newey Reflects on Red Bull Exit: “I think the guys also felt, perhaps, that they needed to show that they could do it on their own”

Formula 1’s most legendary car designer, Adrian Newey, has officially embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his career—transforming Aston Martin into a true title contender. After decades of designing championship-winning machines for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, Newey’s move to Aston Martin could shake up the grid like never before.

But can F1’s most celebrated mind turn Aston Martin from a midfield dream into a championship reality?

From Red Bull to Aston Martin: A Whole New Challenge

Newey, who helped build Red Bull from an afterthought to an F1 powerhouse, admits this transition feels eerily similar to his early Red Bull days.

“I don’t know yet, but I suspect it may be more on the Red Bull side of things,” Newey reflected.

🔹 His move from March to Williams saw him step into an already-established operation.
🔹 His transition to McLaren was a similar evolution, refining an already successful team.
🔹 But Red Bull? That was different—it required not just car design expertise, but an entire infrastructure overhaul to create a winning culture.

Aston Martin sits somewhere in between. The team has big financial backing, cutting-edge facilities, and top-tier hires—but lacks the race-winning pedigree of an F1 powerhouse. That’s where Newey comes in.

Why Did Newey Leave Red Bull?

The shocking departure from Red Bull left fans and insiders wondering: why would the man behind F1’s most dominant cars walk away at the peak of success?

“If you had asked me 12 months ago whether I’d leave Red Bull and start again elsewhere, I’d have said you were crazy.”

But internal politics at Red Bull, power struggles, and a desire for a fresh challenge led to a decision that even Newey himself didn’t anticipate.

“For various reasons, I felt I wouldn’t be true to myself if I stayed.”

Once he decided to leave, retirement was an option, but the competitive fire still burned too strong.

“I realized I’d get bored doing nothing. I’ve loved this job since I was ten, and I’ve been lucky to enjoy most of my working days, so why stop now?”

2026 Regulations: A Game-Changer—Or a Nightmare?

Newey steps into Formula 1 at a pivotal moment—2026 will bring the most radical regulation changes in decades, with overhauls to both chassis and power units.

“I think there’s a big chance it could be an engine-dominated formula at the start, just like 2014 was.”

🔺 The biggest unknown? Whether power unit supremacy will dictate performance, just as Mercedes crushed the hybrid era in 2014.
🔺 If the regulations favor combustion engine performance, one manufacturer could dominate for years.
🔺 If electrical performance is the key factor, teams may have more room to catch up.

Aston Martin’s exclusive Honda engine partnership for 2026 means that Honda must get it right—or risk dragging Newey’s designs down with them.

Will Newey Influence Aston Martin’s 2025 Car?

While his primary focus is 2026, Newey isn’t ruling out a role in the 2025 development—especially with Lawrence Stroll eager to fast-track progress.

“My concentration will be on 2026, but no doubt Lawrence Stroll will want me a little involved in 2025. Whether I can contribute anything, I don’t know yet.”

If Newey’s fingerprints end up on the 2025 Aston Martin, expect early signs of what’s to come in 2026.

Can Newey Deliver Aston Martin’s First F1 Championship?

🔹 New facilities? ✅
🔹 Top-tier funding? ✅
🔹 A championship-level driver in Fernando Alonso? ✅
🔹 The greatest designer in F1 history? ✅

All the pieces are there. Now, it’s up to Newey and the team to put them together.

“I still love what I do, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Aston Martin is rolling the dice on a legendary mind—and if Newey pulls it off, it could be one of the greatest F1 stories ever written.
