The main shareholder of Red Bull, Thai tycoon Chalerm Yoovidhya, has publicly supported Horner amid controversies. If Adrian Newey leaves Red Bull as expected, his next destination in Formula 1 may already be on the horizon, as reports about his wife, Amanda Smerczak, suggest a possible move. Newey, widely recognized as one of the sport’s top car designers, faced scrutiny after allegations of misconduct by team principal Christian Horner towards a female employee. Despite being cleared after an internal investigation, the verdict is being appealed and recent reports indicate that the 65-year-old Newey is tired of the power dynamics within the team and intends to step back. Red Bull’s majority shareholder, billionaire Thai Chalerm Yoovidhya, has publicly supported Horner amid the controversies. However, co-owner Mark Mateschitz reportedly wants Horner removed. Given Newey’s vast experience, it seems unlikely that he will completely leave Formula 1. Speculations already link him to Ferrari, the team seen as Red Bull’s main rival. According to the Daily Mail, Smerczak has been looking for properties in Italy, especially in Maranello, where Ferrari is based. Joining Fred Vasseur’s team would be a good option for Newey’s potential move. Ferrari’s appeal is expected to increase next year, with the anticipation that Lewis Hamilton will replace Carlos Sainz Jr. at the end of the 2024 season. With Mercedes facing difficulties, Hamilton’s two-year contract represents his final push to win an eighth world title, and collaborating with Newey would significantly increase his chances. Newey’s current contract with Red Bull runs until 2025, but his ability to join Ferrari next year depends on contractual details, including the existence of a release clause, which has not been confirmed by either party. Since joining Red Bull in 2006, Newey has played a crucial role in securing seven driver championships for the team. His close relationship with Horner has been evident, with Horner praising Newey’s contributions to the team’s success. “He is an integral part of the team,” Horner said last year when Newey’s contract was extended. “It’s wonderful to have him with us, and as the team continues to grow, we have strength and depth. But having Adrian with us long term is fantastic for everyone in the team.”
