A fan was seriously injured in the first stage of the Dakar 2024. The victim is a Russian citizen who suffered compound fractures to the tibia and fibula of one of his legs.
The incident is reported by Agência Lusa, cited by SAPO, and it caused a delay of almost an hour in the start of the stage for the cars. The spectator was in the middle of the track and was hit by a vehicle from the race, after entering a prohibited area for the second time.
The race director, David Castera, explained that the citizen became nervous and hesitated when he saw the car, changing directions twice. The collision was inevitable and the fan was immediately assisted before being transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.
