AdBlue is the first reason for complaints. What can go wrong?

AdBlue: o que é e como funciona o aditivo que salvou o Diesel

The anti-pollution system – AdBlue is consistently the first reason for complaints in the automotive sector in Portugal. The latest report from Portal da Queixa revealed that until October, the number of complaints registered an increase of 48.3%, compared to the same period in 2022, but the main reason for the complaint remained.

The AdBlue liquid, an aqueous solution of urea (32.5% pure urea, 67.5% demineralized water), which needs to be regularly refilled, in a dedicated tank for this fluid, whose filling nozzle can be found under the fuel tank cap, in the trunk or in the engine compartment, depending on the car.

It is used to reduce CO2 emissions, facilitating compliance with current anti-pollution standards. After combustion, when it comes into contact with the gases, the AdBlue liquid promotes a chemical reaction, the result of which is the transformation of part of the nitrogen oxides into water vapor and nitrogen.

Where is the problem?

AdBlue is not a fuel additive, it is an additional fluid for use in diesel cars that requires regular refilling. It does not require maintenance, but rather assistance. For this reason, and Euromaster technicians recommend that the system be checked at each general vehicle inspection, based on the number of years or kilometers traveled. “AdBlue is very prone to crystallize, which can lead to blockages and malfunctioning of the pump itself. This process results in a vehicle breakdown that can cost between €800 and €1,200, depending on the model,” warns the specialized company in car maintenance, emphasizing the increase in the number of vehicles that enter the workshops due to this problem and others related to anti-contamination systems.

Vehicle won’t start without AdBlue

All vehicles equipped with AdBlue have a mileage alert for the next refueling, and indeed, checking the level of this tank is as important as the gasoline level: if the liquid runs out, the vehicle can reach the destination, but it will not start again until it is refueled.

Most vehicles emit prior warnings about the AdBlue level, and when it is low, the engine failure warning light comes on. Depending on the brand and model, AdBlue should be refilled every 10,000 to 20,000 kilometers.
