Acosta: Frustration drove success in the MotoGP race in Barcelona.

Acosta: Frustração impulsionou sucesso na corrida de MotoGP em Barcelona.

Pedro Acosta, the current champion, played a significant role in Pecco Bagnaia’s victory at the Catalunya Grand Prix? Acosta, a rookie sensation, showed great determination, but unfortunately crashed on lap 11 while chasing the leader, Jorge Martin. Despite the setback, Acosta managed to get back on his bike and earn three points by finishing in 13th place. Meanwhile, Martin, who was able to fend off Acosta’s attacks, could not hold off Bagnaia in the final laps of the race at the challenging Barcelona circuit. So, did Acosta contribute to Bagnaia’s victory and could he have won the race himself?

Acosta was one of the four riders who opted for the softer rear tire, which theoretically is faster but less durable than the medium rear tire preferred by most riders. His pace showed a sense of urgency, but he made it clear he wasn’t trying to rush to the front. Marc Marquez’s impressive performance, moving from 14th to third place with a soft tire, showed he could handle the demands of the race. Acosta believed the soft tire was the key to victory, considering the difference between him, Bagnaia, and Marquez. Even without taking into account the time lost due to the crash, Acosta’s race time would have put him in third place.

Although Acosta refrained from stating that he could have won the race, he clearly believed it was within his reach. The crash frustrated him not only because it prevented him from reaching a place on the podium, but also because its cause remained uncertain. Acosta mentioned an issue with the front part of his bike, but failed to provide a clear explanation. The Gas Gas team did not mention any problems in their post-race press release. Despite the crash, Acosta had already fulfilled his role for Bagnaia, as Martin himself acknowledged. Acosta’s pressure on Martin forced the championship leader to increase the pace, thus benefiting Bagnaia.

Martin wanted to lead the race, and Acosta’s presence pressured him to set a faster pace after both overtook Bagnaia. However, Martin’s lap times gradually decreased, while Bagnaia maintained a consistent pace until he caught up and passed Martin. Martin admitted that he may have pushed too hard with Acosta right behind him, resulting in tire degradation that affected his performance. Bagnaia, on the other hand, adopted a strategy of maintaining a steady pace and not pushing too hard early on. This approach proved successful, as he gradually gained an advantage over his rivals.

It is worth considering whether Martin’s efforts to keep Acosta at bay and preserve his tires were ultimately futile. If Martin had allowed Acosta to pass him or stayed behind Bagnaia in the early stages of the race, he could have saved more tire life but sacrificed track position. Martin’s intention was to lead the race, so tire pressure was likely adjusted accordingly. Furthermore, Martin’s performance in races that wear out tires more, like this one, has historically been weaker compared to Bagnaia’s. Bagnaia consistently demonstrated better race pace throughout the weekend, making him the favorite in a direct battle on Sunday.

Despite losing the duel with Bagnaia, Martin still scored more points than him at the Barcelona circuit. This 10-point difference should not be a cause for concern for Martin, who remains in a strong position to win the championship this year. With a comfortable lead over the third-placed rider, Martin made a wise decision not to risk a crash and settle for second place. It was a strategic move that allowed him to secure 20 valuable points.
