Jacob Abel, the rookie from Dale Coyne Racing, will receive full support from his family’s team, Abel Motorsports, during his inaugural attempt at the Indianapolis 500. The decision by Bill Abel to redirect his team’s resources towards supporting his son signifies the importance of this family-oriented endeavor.
Bill Abel expressed to RACER, “This means a whole lot to all of us, and we want to be there and be able to hopefully enjoy seeing Jacob get in the race, and finish the race, without having to be preoccupied with managing our own car and everything else that accompanies it.” He further stressed that Jacob’s participation in the Indy 500 is their top priority, emphasizing the family’s commitment to support him during his debut.
Abel Motorsports, a leading team in Indy NXT, made its entry into IndyCar in 2023 with an Indy 500 program for RC Enerson, using a chassis owned by the Enersons. The team then procured a new chassis in 2024, which has since been of interest to drivers seeking a team for the Speedway.
PREMA Racing acquired Enerson’s car, and Abel Motorsports, choosing not to participate in the 2025 Indy 500, will convert their unused chassis from a Chevy configuration to a Honda-powered one. This move is to ensure that Jacob Abel has a race-ready spare car if required by Coyne.
The 2025 Indy 500 is projected to have at least 34 qualifiers, one more than the 33 available starting positions. This means at least one driver will be eliminated during qualifications. Bill Abel’s decision to retrofit his car with a Honda engine, in line with Coyne’s engine partner, and his team’s efforts to optimize the chassis for the Speedway, stems from witnessing Dale Coyne rookie Nolan Siegel’s crash prior to time trials in 2024. Siegel was subsequently removed from the race due to insufficient speed in a backup car that was not fully optimized.
Bill Abel praised Dale Coyne’s team for their impressive track record at Indy. He is grateful for having a car that his team can prepare for the Speedway, ready for use if necessary. He said, “We’re continuing to finish the build on it. We’re getting it updated. The body fit is being done, all the little bits and pieces are being massaged, and everything is being done so the car is ready to run.” Abel made it clear that while there have been inquiries about purchasing or using the car, it is being built as a highly competitive vehicle, ready for Jacob if the need arises.
