The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is an innovative racing series that has the potential to revolutionize the world of motorsport. Taking place on April 27 at the Yas Marina Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit, the first A2RL event will feature eight teams competing for a prize of 2.25 million dollars.

Unlike traditional racing series, A2RL uses cutting-edge autonomous technology. The cars participating in the inaugural event are the Super Formula SF23 cars manufactured by Dallara, which are currently the fastest open-wheel cars in the world, second only to Formula 1. These cars were specifically designed to incorporate autonomous software, known as the ‘autonomous stack’, which includes sensors and actuators. Additionally, the chassis is built using sustainable biocomposite materials.

Although all cars in A2RL are identical, each team has the opportunity to code their own ‘autonomous stack’. This coding will determine the success of each team. Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, explains the modifications made to the SF23 race cars for A2RL: “The modifications made to the SF23 race cars used in A2RL are extensive. All race cars in A2RL use a drive-by-wire system that replicates human inputs. This system uses actuators for steering, brakes, and gear shifts, eliminating the need for a physical driver. These actuators are controlled by the onboard computer. The next major modification is the wide range of sensor technologies that will allow machine learning algorithms to ‘see’ and develop situational awareness – including radar, lidar, cameras, and GPS.”

Each car will be equipped with seven 360-degree cameras, which will be connected to a high-power Neousys RGS-8805GC computer. The SF23 suspension is pushrod both at the front and rear, with adjustable shock absorbers. The braking system consists of Brembo brake calipers and carbon discs.

Under the hood, the SF23 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the K20C1 engine, based on the 2.0-liter Honda engine used in Super Formula. It is paired with a 3MO six-speed gearbox. Yokohama Advan tires, commonly used in Super Formula, will be used on the SF23.

Replicating the skills and inputs of real-world drivers is a significant challenge that all eight teams must overcome to succeed in the A2RL. Teams will need to code their AI systems to adapt to various track conditions, levels of grip, G-forces, and suspension movements that drivers and race cars encounter at each circuit. This competition not only showcases innovative AI technology, but also highlights the potential of autonomous vehicles in improving road safety.
