IMSA reveals preliminary list for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship event at Watkins Glen International, with a total of 56 cars ready to compete in the six-hour race.
Scheduled to take place on June 23, this will be the sixth round of the 2024 calendar and the third round of the Endurance Cup.
After a break of over three months since the 12 Hours of Sebring, all four classes of the WeatherTech series will finally come together on the track.
Each race in the series so far has seen a different winner in the GTP class, and the upcoming Six Hours of Glen will serve as the second appearance of the LMDh era at this circuit.
Lamborghini Iron Lynx will enter its second race with car #63 SC63, driven by the duo Matteo Cairoli and Andrea Caldarelli.
After their impressive seventh place in the challenging Sebring event, with the help of Romain Grosjean, the duo will be eager to maintain their momentum in the race that takes place just one week after the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the LMP2 category, Era Motorsport is on a high with their recent successes, having emerged as winners of the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. However, their victory in Sebring was achieved in thrilling circumstances, with Connor Zilisch defending his lead in an exciting sprint to the finish line.
With a current lead in the LMP2 standings, the #18 Oreca 07 team will face intense pressure as they strive to withstand the competition from the other 22 entries in LMP2, including the lone #33 Ligier JSP217 from Sean Creech Motorsport.
After their impressive fourth place in Sebring, drivers Joao Barbosa, Jonny Edgar, and Lance Willsey are determined to fight for a good result and capitalize on any mistakes made by their LMP2 rivals.
The Riley has been the dominant force in racing for the past three years, although this happened during the period when the LMP3 category was part of the main IMSA championship. This year, their #74 Oreca 07 car will be driven by Gar Robinson and Felipe Fraga, who are seeking their fourth consecutive LMP2 victory at Watkins Glen. Additionally, Josh Burdon will be seeking his second consecutive victory, but the first victory for Riley in the LMP2 category at this circuit.
In the GTD Pro category, the spotlight is on the AO Racing ‘Rexy’ Porsche 911 GT3.R #77, which has achieved consecutive victories at Laguna Seca and Detroit. Although these were short races, drivers Laurin Heinrich and Seb Priaulx currently have an 84-point advantage. However, both the qualifying and the race at Watkins Glen will be crucial for accumulating a good points total.
Vasser Sullivan had a strong performance at last year’s event, securing victories in the GTD and GTD Pro categories. They will be seeking to defend their titles against a field of 21 cars in the first category and 11 cars in the second.
