1948 Chevy Decoliner Lost $200K in Just 2 Years Despite Looking Like Nothing Else

COE, short for cab over engine, is a term used to describe trucks with the cab positioned directly over the front axle and engine. These vehicles are typically used for transporting goods or collecting trash. However, there have been instances where COE-based builds have exceeded expectations and become valuable assets at auctions.

One such impressive build is the Decoliner. I first came across this vehicle in 2021 at a cars auction house called Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Decoliner immediately caught my attention with its unique combination of utilitarianism and beauty, reminiscent of classic cars like the Chevy Tri-Five and early muscle cars.

The Decoliner is the brainchild of Dale Gerry, a Canadian customizer known for his work on Mustangs, Celicas, and food trucks. However, the Decoliner is his magnum opus. It took him a staggering ten years and 10,000 working hours to bring this vehicle to life, showcasing his passion for the Art Deco styles of the late 1930s.

Originally a 1948 Chevrolet COE delivery truck, the Decoliner has undergone extensive modifications to pay homage to the golden age of automobile styling. The vehicle now spans 23 feet (7 meters) in length, with a cabin that has been stretched to accommodate four people. The addition of two extra doors and bucket seats enhances the overall spaciousness of the cabin.

Inside, the Decoliner is adorned with luxurious red Italian leather. The dashboard, sourced from a 1960s Chrysler, features Dakota Digital gauges and an Andre’s sound system, adding a touch of vintage charm. The bodywork of the Decoliner is a masterpiece in itself, crafted from aluminum and composite materials. The cab, in particular, is a sight to behold, accentuated by the stunning fenders that flank it. These fenders alone required 1,000 hours of craftsmanship, accounting for ten percent of the entire build time.

Located behind the cab is the “hump” of the COE, which extends the cab and supports a double set of wheels. Within this hump, Gerry cleverly concealed a storage compartment that can accommodate golf clubs. The doors to this compartment open in a manner reminiscent of the space shuttle’s cargo bay, adding a touch of whimsy to the Decoliner.

In conclusion, the Decoliner is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of Dale Gerry. This COE-based build defies expectations, transforming a humble delivery truck into a stunning masterpiece that captures the essence of the Art Deco era.

In a stunning turn of events, the iconic 1948 Chevrolet Decoliner has recently been sold once again. This time, however, it fetched a significantly lower price than before, leaving many car enthusiasts scratching their heads in disbelief. The custom COE, which first caught my attention over two years ago, was previously sold for a whopping $511,500. But now, it has been acquired for a mere $313,500. That’s a jaw-dropping difference of almost $200,000!

But let’s not focus solely on the price. The true beauty of this vintage masterpiece lies in its mechanical prowess. The original engine, whatever it may have been, has been replaced with a powerful 502ci Ram Jet V8 sourced from GM. Although we don’t have exact details on its output, one thing is for sure – it packs a punch. This mighty engine is paired with a Gearstar 4L80E overdrive automatic transmission, ensuring a seamless and exhilarating driving experience.

But the wonders don’t stop there. The Decoliner boasts an aluminum tandem-axle chassis that is elevated by a fully adjustable air-ride suspension system. This innovative setup, coupled with Aldan American shocks, provides an unparalleled level of comfort and control. And let’s not forget about the American Racing Torq Thrust wheels, which not only enhance the vintage aesthetic but also offer exceptional performance. To bring this magnificent vehicle to a halt, C5 Corvette disc brakes have been installed on each wheel, guaranteeing impeccable stopping power.

It’s clear that the Decoliner is a true work of art, meticulously crafted to capture the essence of a bygone era. Its timeless appeal and remarkable features make it a coveted piece among collectors and enthusiasts alike. As it changes hands once more, we can only wonder what the future holds for this remarkable vehicle. Will its value continue to decline, or will it regain its former glory? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain – the 1948 Chevrolet Decoliner is a true automotive gem that will forever captivate the hearts of those who lay eyes upon it.
