BYD has recently reached a new milestone in the production of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles: 15 million units manufactured (about five million of which were produced in the last year alone), a figure that illustrates the very rapid growth rate of the Chinese brand. The company even surpasses the combined numbers of two “heavyweights,” considering only these two types of powertrains: Tesla (8.1 million) and the Volkswagen Group (3 million).
It is worth noting that BYD was founded in 1995, but began producing automobiles only in 2003. The milestone of 10 million units produced was reached at the end of 2024, about two years after the decision to cease the manufacture of internal combustion engine models. News from the portal “CarNewsChina” reveals that the best-selling model from BYD is the Dolphin, with over one million units; followed in the list by the Seagull, Song Plus, and Sealion 06, all members of the Ocean range. The most commercially successful members of the Dynasty series are the Qin, Song, and Tang. Just last November, in Europe, the brand registered 20,281 vehicles, an increase of 230% compared to the same month in 2025.
