Rick Hendrick, $1 Billion HMS Mogul, Shares Powerful Advice for – ‘Do What Makes You Happy, Life is Short’

NASCAR Cup Series team owner Rick Hendrick celebrates after his driver driver Kyle Larson (5) won the Brickyard 400, Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Rick Hendrick, the legendary NASCAR team owner and business magnate, has shared invaluable advice for young professionals aspiring to achieve success in motorsports and beyond. Known for his unparalleled contributions to NASCAR and the automotive industry, Hendrick’s insights offer a rare glimpse into the mindset behind his extraordinary career.

The Key to Success: Passion and Happiness

Speaking on the Business of Motorsports podcast with JR Motorsports co-owner Kelley Earnhardt Miller, Hendrick emphasized the importance of pursuing what brings joy and fulfillment.

“My message to young people is: pick something you like and do it,” Hendrick said. “If you’re miserable in what you do every day, you won’t be very successful.”

For Hendrick, a career rooted in passion has been the foundation of his accomplishments. Whether fielding cars for NASCAR legends or revolutionizing the automotive dealership industry, his success stems from doing what he loves.

“I get to make a living doing the two things I enjoy the most outside of my family—racing and the automobile business,” he added.

Lessons from Adversity

Hendrick acknowledged that the road to success hasn’t been easy. However, his passion and dedication allowed him to overcome challenges and build a legacy.

“Now, has it been easy? No,” Hendrick admitted. “But just follow the path of what makes you happy because life is pretty short.”

Using an example of someone passionate about hiking, Hendrick encouraged individuals to pursue careers aligned with their interests, even if it means starting small. His philosophy underscores the importance of authenticity and joy in one’s work.

The Leadership Factor: Learning from Failure

In another interview, Hendrick revealed a strategy that has guided his business success—studying failures instead of successes. He noted that leadership is often the determining factor in whether a company thrives or falters.

“I studied companies that failed, rather than companies that are successful. Most of the time, the big difference is leadership,” he explained.

Hendrick highlighted the importance of supporting employees, emphasizing the value of providing insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits to foster loyalty and stability.

A Legacy of Excellence

Rick Hendrick’s career is a testament to his philosophy. As the owner of Hendrick Motorsports, he has fielded cars for some of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, including Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. His team has amassed over 290 NASCAR Cup Series wins and 14 Cup Series championships—a record that speaks to his passion-driven approach.

Beyond motorsports, Hendrick’s automotive dealership empire has also thrived, further demonstrating the power of leadership and purpose in building a successful business.

Advice for the Next Generation

Hendrick’s words resonate far beyond motorsports. For anyone looking to build a career, his advice is simple yet profound:

  1. Do what you love: Passion is the cornerstone of sustained success.
  2. Learn from failures: Understanding why others fail is as valuable as learning from those who succeed.
  3. Lead with purpose: Take care of your team, and they’ll take care of the business.

As Hendrick continues to influence NASCAR and the automotive world, his wisdom serves as a guiding light for aspiring entrepreneurs and motorsports professionals alike.
